***CHANGES TO SUNDAY***

Please check the timings of this week’s home training.

Due to the frost that's forecast overnight we believe the pitches will not have defrosted and therefore may not be safe. This, coupled withe the forecast extremely low temperatures means that we have be forced to cancel training for the U6 to U10s and Mini/U12 Girls.

Our purpose is to get kids playing rugby, safely, so we have invoked our Plan B and moved the U11s to Academy to the the 4G pitch at Tunbridge Wells School for Boys in Sevenoaks.

U11s, U12s and U13 Boys will start at 10am.

U14 boys, U14 girls & U15 boys will start at 11am

U16 Girls and Academy Boys will start at Midday.

*** Please arrive early for a prompt start***

Our coaches will be keeping sessions active so there is no standing around getting cold, however please make sure that your children wear weather appropriate kit - lots of thin layers and hats (bobble hats always look good).

The most important thing is that our players are safe, have fun and that we don’t deter our players from coming back.

Stay tuned for updates from your head coaches as the weather evolves ahead of Sunday, as plans may need to be changed at short notice.

UPDATES

FIT TO PLAY

At this time of year, it is not unusual for our communities - young and old - to have higher incidences of illness, such as coughs, colds, flu and, of course, Covid. You may have seen in the news that there are also currently higher than usual cases of other airborne infections

Please do not bring your child to rugby if they are unfit to play (for any reason) or if they are (or you suspect they may be) infectious in any way. This means that any child with a temperature, headache, persistent cough or who has vomited or had diarrhoea in the prior 48 hours should not attend rugby.

Also help reduce the spread of disease by encouraging your child to take simple precautions like washing their hands regularly and ensuring they avoid coughing over others (do the 'vampire cough'!).

If you have any concerns about symptoms, please refer to NHS online or call 111 for advice.

Stay healthy Mighty Oaks!

COACH STASH & TRAINING

This year qualifying coaches will receive a polar fleece - the best stash we have ever provided!

To qualify, coaches must have:

  • paid their child’s subs

  • have an up to date DBS (or be in progress)

  • completed the annual training (both head case and safeguarding)

Your age group leads will have received a list of what coaches have completed and what is outstanding (or have been asked to confirm who is still coaching in their group).

The first batch of coaches who have qualified will have received an email from Hendo asking to confirm their size.

To update your DBS, please see Andy Clark in the committee room on Sunday mornings, bringing the appropriate ID.

To complete your training, please use the links below - remembering to ensure you do so logged into GMS so it shows on your record.

RFU COURSES

There are still plenty of opportunities for coaches to attend RFU coaching courses - check them out below.

We do have a limited budget available for coaches to attend courses appropriate to their age groups. Please contact Hendo for more information

SAFEGUARDING

All our volunteer coaches need to be DBS checked in order to coach at the Club and the club regularly monitors that its coaches are up to date. With the first check being completed this week, coaches can proactively check their status on GMS, or check with Hendo.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • All of our amazing parents should have received subs requests direct from Spond and most have paid.

It’s vital that all players are members, in order to be covered by the Club’s insurance and whilst there is a short grace period (primarily for members who are new to the club) we ask that this is paid as soon as possible as we enter weekend of fixtures and festival.

If anyone hasn’t received a request – we recommend checking the contact details on Spond in the first instance.

If there are any other issues, anyone can contact their age group lead or Andy McClinton, which includes anyone who needs financial support.

  • Sevenoaks Rugby asks all parents of Mini players in the U5s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s to remain on site and pitch-side during training and matches. Only by exception can they be absent and then they must nominate another adult to take responsibility for their child and inform the relevant coach and the player.

We find that some players in these groups can get upset if they are left alone and sometimes need emotional support from a parent or adult they recognise.

For parents of Mini players in the U10s and 11s that do not remain pitch side they must inform the coach and the player and remain contactable (or nominate another adult to take responsibility).

  • Padded headgear / scrum caps has never been approved or marketed by World Rugby or the RFU to reduce the risk of concussion and there continues to be no conclusive evidence that wearing headguards reduces the chances of sustaining a concussion while playing or training.

Wearing a headguard should be the personal choice of the player and/or parent. While a headguard can provide some protection (e.g. covering the ears) and confidence (e.g. when introducing players to contact); there is a possibility that wearing protective equipment could potentially change a player’s behaviour (i.e. making them over confident and thus neglecting correct technique and risking further injury to themselves or others). Therefore, players and coaches are encouraged not to neglect correct technique, particularly in the tackle and ensure that players are aware of the purpose of headguards and their limitations.

We recommend that players talk to their coaches about the relative confidence of their child, when deciding whether a headboard is appropriate for them.

  • Headcase is one of the UK’s leading concussion awareness and education resources. We take player safety extremely seriously, and this course is aimed at helping us prevent and manage suspected concussions.

    COACHES

All of our coaches are required to complete “Headcase” training annually to be able to coach at the club and receive their free stash (which is on the high seas and on its way to us). Coaches can now see on their GMS dashboard whether this is up to date. You should log into GMS course finder (filter for “virtual”) to complete the course.

    https://gms.rfu.com/GMS/coursefinder

    PARENTS

We also invite the parents of mini and youth players (and youth players) to also complete the training or check out the guidance - it will help prepare them for if the worst should happen and give them insight into the return to play process.

    https://rise.articulate.com/share/nc3KPjesYQrj5WjJ4tGS6Grs_ERkPY2Q#/

  • The standard process is for a pitch inspection to be completed at 8am on Sunday mornings - NB this does NOT mean that a message will be sent at exactly 8am.

Often an inspection is also made the day before, if not sooner, with the aim of giving people as much notice as possible.

A message is sent to age group leads as soon as possible for them to cascade to their groups. Age groups should not make a unilateral decision to cancel home training or matches without consulting with the Head of Minis/Youth or the DoR.

  • Rugby’s values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are what makes the game special for those who enjoy the environment and culture they create.

They define the game and define England Rugby

Please remember that it is our collective responsibility to uphold and role model the values of our sport. Whether we are players, coaches, parents and/or spectators; we have a duty to role model the values to those around us, including our mini and youth players. So, please always show respect to each other on and off the pitch, to opposition, officials, staff and our fellow members.

    https://rise.articulate.com/share/nc3KPjesYQrj5WjJ4tGS6Grs_ERkPY2Q#/

UPDATES

PITCHES FOR THIS WEEK

This week’s pitch plan has been finalised and can be found below

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

We’re now really pleased we have extra all weather pitch space for youth mid week training and for minis and youth to use on Sunday mornings.

The Committee has prioritised this investment for the mini and youth age groups to ensure we can get as many children as possible playing - no matter what the weather throws at us.

We will use the pitch as an extra space in normal conditions but also have a contingency plan for its use, should the pitches become unplayable.

Please see the FAQs for a reminder of the pitch inspection process

RUGBY WORLD CUP FINAL

The Women’s rugby World Cup semi final will be showing from 9am at the Club next Sunday, so resist the temptation to watch the score and come and watch it with friends (and a hot drink / croissant / bacon sandwich!).

Come on you Red Roses!

COACH STASH IS HERE!!!

Having circumnavigated the globe several times the new coach stash is here!

We are enormously grateful to our volunteer coaches and believe they deserve top quality stash to keep them warm through those cold winter months on the pitch.

This year qualifying coaches will receive a polar fleece - the best stash we have ever provided!

Similar to previous years - to qualify coaches must have:

  • paid their child’s subs

  • have an up to date DBS (or be in progress)

  • completed the annual training (head case and safeguarding)

Hendo is collating the list of those who have completed what they need to from GMS this weekend and will message those to ask them to confirm their size. The first batch should be ready for collections from next week.

ACTION REQUIRED

BALL TECHNICIANS

Please see the Ball Technician rota for the remainder of the season below.

Please can you diarise and make sure you provide a minimum of 4 ball technicians for allotted game.

For mini age groups who would like to support a match and provide ball technicians, please let Hendo know which fixture you’d like them to attend.

SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT

I have added age group leads to a WhatsApp group for social media content.

You can stay on the group and provide social media content or nominate someone else from your age group who will take responsibility to provide content regularly.

Why is this important?

  • We want to celebrate all our successes

  • We want to increase our social presence

  • Attract more players and volunteers

What content are we looking for?

  • Team photos

  • Action shots (High Definition)

  • Happy (and/or muddy) faces

  • Short videos (Max 20 seconds)

  • Player Interviews

  • Coach Interviews

  • Match Reports

  • Tik Tok challenges

How often do we want content?

  • We have 15 age groups across the minis and youth, so we are not necessarily looking for content from every age group every week, but we do want to celebrate our mini and youth players’ successes.

AFFILIATION

Don’t forget that all of our mini and youth players need to affiliate. Having made good progress, Tim McLaughlin has kindly offered to follow up directly with members who haven’t affiliated to help them sign up. Remember, that the Club is required by the RFU regulations to have all mini and youth players affiliated and players should not be selected for fixtures if they have not affiliated.

MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION

We are making great progress with collection of subs, with around 75% of members having paid. If you haven’t paid yet please either pay ASAP or let your age group lead or Andy McClinton know if you need any support. Further reminders will be sent in the coming weeks.

COMING SOON

  • The Club will be showing the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final from 9am on Sunday 13/11. Bring your friends and family and enjoy a hot drink, bacon sandwich or croissant.

  • Next Sunday we will be remembering the fallen during the session. Please keep

  • Description text goes here
  • A family favourite each year - with a traditionally warm and festive atmosphere. Enjoy a perennially heartwarming rendition of Little Donkey performed by our youngest oaks or rousing rounds of the 12 days and God King Wenceslas. Mulled Wine and minced pies a-plenty await all who attend…. and keep an eye out for a jolly fat man in a red suit!

  • Volunteers required to help organise our funday in December!

COACH EDUCATION

AFFILIATE - DON’T LET YOUR CHILD MISS OUT

There is still more to do for a number of age groups - don’t forget that we needed all players to be affiliated on GMS ASAP.

Players not affiliated will not be subject to selection for matches and festivals after a certain date (and aren’t eligible for Kent fixtures) so make sure your children don’t miss out.

If you are having challenges don’t give up - try this link or contact your age group lead now.

The RFU have also confirmed their own prize draw for clubs who match or increase the number of players affiliated versus last year. Prizes include the opportunity to win a training session with and England Rugby legend, a £2,000 club kit voucher and up to three kit packages each worth £1,000.

Another prize will be awarded to the 500th player!

Well done to the Under 13s, Under 11s and Under 14s who are all 100% complete!

SHOWDOWN 3 - EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST NOW!

Looking ahead to later in the season it’s time to secure seats at the Showdown 3 Fixture Saracens v Harlequins on 25th March 2023 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It promises to be a great day out on and off the pitch. Building on last year’s entertainment they have some exciting plans for this year’s Showdown and the rugby should be a spectacle too. Having attended last year it was an amazing, family friendly occasion topped off by Sevenoaks’ own Ben Earl securing the man of the match award.

The club has the first opportunity to purchase tickets in the South Stand (The Family Party Stand) – seated together making it a day out for you all.

All tickets in the south stand are Red & Black and priced at

Adults @ £31.50 / U16s @ £15.75 / U24 or 65+ @ £22.50

In order for us to be allocated an area in the stand we need to provide a rough idea of numbers that will attend – this does have to be fairly accurate so we can get ring fenced seats for you to book together.

Please complete the form below by Sunday 23rd October - payment won’t be needed straight away

INCLUSION SURVEY **** THIRSTY THANK YOU's 14TH OCTOBER **** AFFILIATION - DUE NOW ****

UPDATES

THIRSTY THANK YOU

The Thirsty Thank You has been rescheduled for the 14th October. Trevor, our esteemed chairman, invites all the Club’s volunteers for a drink or two on 14th.

ALL COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS WELCOME

PITCHES FOR THIS WEEK

This week’s pitch plan has been finalized and can be found here:

 https://sevenoaksrugby.com/pitch-booking

Not long until we get extra space at Tech!

PERSONNEL CHANGES

We have some changes to personnel in the mini and youth set up. I’d like to extend huge thank yous to Will Morris and Polly Colesmith who are stepping down.

Polly has been the team manager for what is now the Under 16 girls for the last 3 years. For the vast majority of that time she also supported the under 14 and 18 girls as well. She’s done a fantastic job in helping the club to grow its girls offering and has been proactive and stoic in driving improvements for the girls. We’ll miss her (and her daughter’s) involvement and know she and her family will always be Oaks and always be welcome.

James Sutherland has agreed to take over for the under 16s and is well up to speed thanks to Polly’s transition. We welcome James and know he’ll be as strong a voice the girls as Polly.

We’re also very sad that Will Morris is stepping down from the helm for the Under 8s. He’s led the group from under 5s and felt that the year before contact was a good moment to let someone else take the lead. We’re really pleased that he is staying on to coach (and play!) and will miss (if that’s the right word) his “banter” .

I’m really pleased that Jan Golaszewski has decided to step into the breach and follow Will. It’s clear that he will be fantastic fit for the club and the age group and we’re hopeful about getting him out for the vets soon too!

Please join me in wishing Polly and Will all the best and welcoming James and Jan to their new roles!

WINNER WINNER

CONGRATULATIONS to the Under 13s who achieved 100% affiliation first. We’ll make sure that Cory gets the £50 bar credit to spend on his coaches/parents!

There is still more to do for a number of age groups - don’t forget that we needed all players to be affiliated on GMS ASAP.

If you haven’t done it yet, please do so now.

We have affiliated 438 children so far and have another c200 to go.

As an added bonus the 450th child to affiliate with the club will receive a training ball from the club.

MEDIA

We’d love each age group to find a volunteer to help provide content for Social Media and the Club website - photos, match reports, even player puff pieces!

Ideally we’d like a non coach volunteer (come on parents!) to join our small social media team (WhatsApp) so they can share material.

We’d like all age groups and club members and stakeholders to be well represented across our Media - Minis or Youth, Parents or Siblings, Coaches or players.

1 volunteer per age group - no experience required - a smartphone and WhatsApp is all that’s needed. We want to set you up on a WhatsApp group and provide images and very brief summaries of what has happened for your age group each week - it shouldn’t take much time at all. Periodically we might ask one of them to actually post some of it to social media too - again nothing too time consuming!

Please let Hendo know who your volunteer is!

DON’T BE A HEADCASE…

…. do your headcase!

Headcase is one of the UK’s leading concussion awareness and education resources.

PARENTS

We also invite the parents of mini and youth players (and youth players) to also complete the training or check out the guidance - it will help prepare them for if the worst should happen and give them insight into the return to play process.

ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS

All of our amazing parents should have received subs requests direct from Spond and most have paid.

It’s vital that all players are members, in order to be covered by the Club’s insurance and whilst there is a short grace period (primarily for members who are new to the club) we ask that this is paid as soon as possible as we enter weekend of fixtures and festival.

CLUB NEWS

We’re asking all our members and parents to make sure they’ve signed up to the club newsletter using the link below.

This way you can be sure to keep up to date with all the news from across the Club

INCLUSION SURVEY

For the past two years, the RFU have asked people involved in the community game  to take part in our inclusion and diversity survey.  This research has helped shape and inform the RFU’s work in this area and is key to supporting the RFU with its strategic objective to drive rugby union in England to better reflect the diversity of society.

Your views and experience are crucial to us being able to reflect in our plans the reality of community rugby. We would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey.

We’d like to invite all club members to complete the survey

PARKING UPDATE

Please remember that there is NO parking available to the rugby club at Lady Boswell’s on Sunday. You risk your car being locked in by the church until they open up on Monday morning and we risk losing access to their pitches on Sunday morning!

UPDATES

THIRSTY THANK YOU

The Thirsty Thank You has been rescheduled for the 14th October. Trevor, our esteemed chairman, invites all the Club’s volunteers for a drink or two on 14th.

ALL COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS WELCOME

PITCHES FOR THIS WEEK

This week’s pitch plan has been finalized and can be found here:

 https://sevenoaksrugby.com/pitch-booking

Not long until we get extra space at Tech!

1 volunteer per age group - no experience required - a smartphone and WhatsApp is all that’s needed

Please let Hendo know who your volunteer is!

DON’T BE A HEADCASE…

…. do your headcase!

Headcase is one of the UK’s leading concussion awareness and education resources.

If anyone hasn’t received a request – we recommend checking the contact details on Spond in the first instance.

If there are any other issues, anyone can contact their age group lead or Andy McClinton, which includes anyone who needs financial support.

COACH EDUCATION

THE ART OF COACHING

We’re really proud of our volunteer coaches and believe in the importance of supporting them to develop themselves. This season we’ve upped the ante and have been really proud to have offered “The Art of Coaching” course. We had over 50 coaches from across all the age groups give up their time for two consecutive Sundays in September. Whilst clearly it was rugby related, it was centred around how we coach rather than what we coach. We think all of the attendees - regardless of experience - got something our of the training, and it was a fantastic opportunity to meet coaches from other age groups and share experiences.

There is plenty more support to come soon, including…

REMINDERS

AFILLIATION

Don’t forget that we needed all players to be affiliated on GMS by the end of September (yesterday). If you haven’t done it yet, please do so now. If you are having challenges don’t give up - contact your age group lead now!

We’ll announce which age group has won the £50 bar spend (by getting to 100%) this week!

CLUB NEWS

We’re asking all our members and parents to make sure they’ve signed up to the club newsletter using the link below.

This way you can be sure to keep up to date with all the news from across the Club

PARKING UPDATE

Please remember that there is NO parking available to the rugby club at Lady Boswell’s on Sunday. You risk your car being locked in by the church until they open up on Monday morning and we risk losing access to their pitches on Sunday morning!

WHAT A SEASON!

Now that the rugby has finished for the 2021/22 season, its a time for reflection on what has gone well and where we can continue to improve for next season and beyond.

Last season was undisputedly one of the best in the history of the Club, made all the more sweet after a period of personal and collective challenges through the pandemic, from the Minis, Youth Girls, Youth Boys, Academy and Seniors - there were successes of some sort across the board.

For the Minis, success can be as simple as learning to catch the ball or score a try. For the Youth players, it might be learning a forwards or backs move. For the coaches, success is seeing enjoyment etched on their players’ faces and noticing how their players have grown from September to April - regardless of outcomes.

Reflecting on the past season, its been clear how much fun our children have playing for Sevenoaks and how much they have developed. Not only that, but we’re immensely proud that our Youth age groups continue to develop, produce positive performances, often win silverware and most importantly finish the Under 15s ready for rugby in the Academy and Senior Squad.

This week’s update includes some examples and highlights to back up why we’re so proud.

We also have some opportunities to share your feedback with the committee - don’t miss out!

QUESTION TIME

LE TOUR - C’EST FANSTASTIQUE

The Sevenoaks U15 Le Tour to Lyon was fantastique!

With two fixtures, against Le Lou and OSGL, and a super 14 match there was plenty of rugby on the Group’s final tour together before entering the Academy.

But, there is much more to a rugby tour than rugby - from sampling the French culture and food to ‘Le Tribunal de La Tournee’ (Tour Court) - tours are about making life long memories and friends.

Of course, some things on tour must stay on tour, but the coaching group have shared some fantastique insight into their trip - click below for the full write up.

WINNER WINNER ANNUAL DINNER

Don’t miss this year’s Annual Dinner - open to all coaches, parents and senior players - its a great opportunity to reflect on the successes of the year, celebrate each other and have a delicious curry with friends!

SUNDAY 10TH APRIL

  • The most senior adult squad take to the pitch this weekend against old foes, Westcombe Park, in the Kent Cup Final at Maidstone this Sunday.

Having narrowly lost to Combe in the dying moments of the match in the 2020 final (possibly the last game of rugby in the country before the 1st lockdown), the Mighty Acorns will be looking to reverse the result.

The squad has plenty of Mini and Youth coaches on show, so come and support this wonderful team!

Kick off is at 1600 - come along and show your support!

To find out more about the Acorns, check out this fantastic blog

    COME ON YOU OAKS!

  • This weekend is the penultimate training of the season for the Minis and the last before a short Easter break.

I’m sure the Coaches have lots of fun games in mind for all our minis.

  • The Under 12 Boys have an exciting bit of variety this week at an East Grinstead 10s festival.

The Under 15 Girls are away this week with a friendly against T Wells and also some girls at Kent Trials.

The Under 13 Boys are enjoying a trip to the coast this weekend to play against Hastings on Sunday.

  • The U13 Girls, U14 Boys, U15 Boys and Academy Boys and Girls are all training at home on Sunday.

LAST WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

Last Sunday saw the Oaks Minis participate in the Westcombe Park Festival. I had the pleasure of being able to wander around and see some of the age groups and it was clear that the kids were having great fun and playing some brilliant rugby! Check out the Photos below.

There were a couple great matches and results in the Youth section with the Under 15 boys beating Medway 39-21, the U16s winning 57 - 3 at Tonbridge Juddians and the Academy Girls winning a friendly against Old Alleynians.

PARENT FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MINI & YOUTH UPDATE - WEEK 26 - LAUNCHING SEVENOAKS LADIES & KIT EXCHANGE

Comment

MINI & YOUTH UPDATE - WEEK 26 - LAUNCHING SEVENOAKS LADIES & KIT EXCHANGE

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEKEND

  • Well done to all the U8s and U9s that travelled to Beccehamians last Sunday.

  • This weekend the Under 10s and 11s travelled to Old Colfeians for a fantastic festival.

As ever, the teams did us proud and continued to play quality rugby and demonstrate the RFU and Club values.

The teamwork on the pitch was only bettered by the spontaneous, player led rendition of “Oh when the Oaks” off the pitch - which is still resounding around SE London, now!

  • At the weekend, our U8s, 9s, 10s and 11s all sent teams to Tunbridge Wells who hosted a fantastic event.

Check out the video (left) for a few clips of the day - the highlight being Molly from under 11s, ripping the ball from an opposition player and bursting through a few more tackles to score a try. Great work Molly!

This was the first festival of 2022, and a great way to kick off!

  • The Under 12 Boys trained with our friends at Tonbridge Juddians and Tunbridge Wells on Sunday.

Playing mixed teams resulted in mixed results - with a couple of wins, a couple of draws and a couple of losses - but did help identify development opportunities.

Most importantly, however, the boys had a great time (in spite of the weather!).

  • The U13 boys also enjoyed a successful trip down the A21, with a mixed team securing a victory 8-3.

  • The U14s took 40 players to Vizards on Sunday.

After last week’s strong performance against Tunbridge Wells, the 14s were a little more disjointed performance across two 20 minute games, but nonetheless enjoyed themselves (albeit the Coaches may not have enjoyed the earlier start!)

  • The U15 boys hosted TJs on our 1st XV pitch in front of a busy crowd on the decking.

The match was closely fought by two strong teams who both brought phenomenal performances.

The Might Oaks ended up victorious, after digging deep and making the supporting home crowd (and coaches) proud.

  • The U15 girls had a terrific time hosting a number of girls from TJs ahead of combining forces for their Kent League match next week.

Preparation went well and its certainly a game to watch this weekend.

THIS WEEK AT SEVENOAKS RUGBY

Following a successful trip to Norfolk, the 1st XV are at home this Saturday against Wimbledon and the 2nd XV welcome Bury St Edmunds to the Paddock. Come along and enjoy the atmosphere - followed by the Six Nations matches live on TV in the clubhouse.

On Sunday, the action continues with large numbers of the minis at the Kent Festivals across the county and some exciting youth fixtures.

  • Wales v France - 20.00 KO

ENGLAND UNDER 20s MIGHTY OAK

We are really pleased that Tori Sellors - a Mighty Oak - has been selected to play for England U20s against Scotland this Saturday.

Tori started playing rugby at Sevenoaks in our mini section and played all the way through the minis and youth girls. She was part of the successful A21 team (Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells) that played in the National Cup Finals.

We wish Tori all the best on Saturday!

MINI & YOUTH WEEKLY UPDATE - WEEK 25 - World (Rugby) Book Day ideas!

MINI & YOUTH WEEKLY UPDATE - WEEK 25 - World (Rugby) Book Day ideas!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEKEND

  • We are extremely proud of our Mini Girls section - which offers girls only rugby for girls in Years 3 to 6. This weekend was a watershed moment for the age group when they attended their first festival.

The event saw 10 clubs gather at our very generous hosts, Tonbridge Juddians, for a pitch up and play festival. It saw a mix of contact and non-contact activities, so there was something for everyone.

The Oaks girls did us all proud and, most importantly, had tremendous fun!

  • The Under 13s boys took two squads to Haywards Heath on Sunday.

The Sussex club’s U13 ‘A’ team had been unbeaten in the last 3 years, so it was fantastic that the Mighty Oaks ‘A’ came away with a 5-2 victory. The ‘B’ team couldn’t quite gain victory, but did attack really well in their 4-7 loss.

  • The U14s squad continued where the 1st XV had left off in previous weeks with some fantastic games with Tunbridge Wells.

Wells have a very strong U14 squad, who won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but the Oaks ‘A’ team came away with a fantastic 21-5 victory this time out. By all accounts the Oaks defence and attack was immense.

The ‘B’ squad also showed fantastic improvement since the away fixture before Christmas and whilst they lost this time out, they are on a strong upward trajectory.

  • The Under 15 ‘B’ squad followed their thrilling, close encounter in the mud, against T Wells last week to comfortably beat Sidcup ‘B’s 47-7 in the sun on Sunday.

  • On Friday the U15s hosted an absolutely fantastic quiz to raise well over £1500 towards their tour to Lyon. The money will be used to pay for tour shirts, transport in Lyon and tickets to see a rugby match and I’m sure will help to make it a Tour that the boys will remember for a long time.

A huge thanks from the Club go to Toby and, in particular Rob, Alison and Tom for being amazing quizmasters and organisers.

It was heart warming to see people from across multiple age groups supporting the event - another reason why rugby (and in particular, Sevenoaks Rugby) is so special.

The highlight of the evening was the ‘Name that Tune’ round which resulted in several spontaneous outbursts of song from all 100+ attendees, culminating in an epic rendition of “Sweet Caroline”!

World Book Day - Friday 4th March

With this week seeing world book day, why not check out some of these rugby reads.

Under 5s to Under 8s

For younger readers: a lot of stickers to do with rugby and backgrounds to stick them on!

Mr Men: The Rugby Match by Roger Hargreaves

A classic sport in a the classic Mr Men storyline style - this is short, colourful read for our Minis.

World Rugby Records by Chris Hawkes

Large book packed with facts and photos, in the style of the Guinness World Records books. Perfect for browsing and hoovering up facts.

The Rugby Zombies by Dan Anthony

3 boys go into the woods one night and find fourteen zombies dressed in Wales rugby tops. Rather than run in fear, the boys help the zombies. Funny and entertaining.7+

Under 9s and over

The Rugby Spirit by Gerard Siggins

A six-book series about a boy who is haunted by the spirits of rugby past. His ghostly teammates help him both solve the problems of the past and to progress his own game. For ages 9+

Pride and Penalties by Chris Higgins

This a great book about a girl who wants to be a rugby player, but her rugby-loving dad doesn’t take her seriously, meaning she needs to make a point... Sadly out of print as a book, but an excellent read on Kindle (ignore the cover art!). 9+

Rampaging Rugby

Packed with player tips, funny stories, irreverent explanations and black and white cartoons, Rampaging Rugby introduces both boys and girls to the game played in 119 countries and loved by 800 millions fans worldwide.

This Haynes manual focuses – in extraordinary detail – on Rugby Union. Every rule and every position of the pitch is dealt with in well-written and clear prose, supported by excellent diagrams. For the wannabe rugby expert, many of whom are children. 9+

Under 13s and over

Winger by Andrew Smith

About a boy who plays rugby, set in the USA. This book and its sequel, Stand Off, are the only older rugby novels out there for children, but does feature challenging attitudes from a group of boys towards girls in particular. Handle with care, though it is well-written – this is as much about girl-boy relationships as rugby. Only suitable for teenage readers, aged 13+

Many sports people’s autobiographies are not appropriate for children, but Johnny Wilkinson’s is. Wilkinson is a legend in the world game. His story is told with humility and reveals an excellent role-model for children. The first 80 pages focus on his involvement in the game as a child. 9+

  • A huge congratulations to the Under 15 boys ‘B’ Squad who came back from a 4 try deficit to beat a strong Tunbridge Wells side in a thrilling encounter in torrid, muddy, conditions.

    Final Score: Oaks 24 - T Wells 22

  • Unfortunately the Youth Girls, U13, U14 and Academy games at the weekend were all cancelled due to the poor weather.

  • A huge thank you to the eleven Under 10 and Mini Girls who were ball technicians this weekend. They braved the weather and fully deserved their hot chocolates!
