Sevenoaks RFC Boys’ Academy

The Academy is the U16-U18 section of the club and at Sevenoaks, it is considered to be the beginning of the senior section as well.

This is demonstrated by the significant senior squad influence in the academy coaching staff. Indeed, our pathway into senior rugby is something that we pride ourselves on, with a constant stream of academy graduates pushing on each year into our men’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs.

The key objectives of the Academy are:

-        to provide best in class playing experience

-        to play an enjoyable and high-quality brand of rugby

-        to produce senior rugby players

-        to create enjoyable memories for players of all ability levels

The Academy currently consists of 3 squads – Academy 1st XV, Academy 2nd XV and the Academy U16s. The Academy 1st and 2nd XVs are primarily selected from our U18 and U17s age groups and are selected week-to-week on merit-based selection criteria. Talented U16 players may also be selected for Academy 1st or 2nd XV as well as their own U16 team.

The Academy 1st XV is entered into the RFU U18 National Cup as well as the Kent League Division 1 and Kent U18s 7s. The Academy 2nd XV is entered into the Kent League Division 4 and the Academy U16s are entered into the Kent League Division 1

Unlike age groups in the junior section, where coaches move through the age groups with the players, the Academy has dedicated coaches who stay at the Academy as the players move through it.

The coaching staff is headed up by Paul Dawson, who combines this role with his role as the Senior Men’s Squad Defence Coach. He is ably supported by a team of six experienced and specialist coaches.

The Academy is big, but we are always looking to develop new players of any ability.  So, whether you want to challenge yourself by playing in one of the best set-ups in the country, or simply want to come and try it out, you are more than welcome.

Training

Pre-Season will begin with a kick-off meeting at the club for new/returning players on Thursday July 4rd 2024.

Pre-Season training will begin on Wednesday July 17th at Sevenoaks School on Wednesdays, 18:30-19:30 and then at Knole Academy on Sundays, 09:00-10:30. It will continue through August, with both Wednesday and Sunday sessions at Knole Academy.

In-Season training will be on Wednesdays, 18:30-19:30, on the 3G at Trinity School and on Sundays at either the club/on the 3G, usually from 11:00-12:30 (subject to change).

The squad trains as a group, so there is continuity of game plan and game play throughout the squad. Individuals will be coached as the sessions progress and skills improve.

Kit

We work as one squad, so we dress as one squad. Each player in the Academy will receive their “stash” of shorts, casual shirt and hoodie. The club will provide returnable playing shirts, contact tops and warm up tees for match days.

Physio and support

As a member of the Academy, you will get access to the same Physio and Clinics as the senior squad – this is for minor or longer injuries or second opinions. The team is on hand to help make sure you are advised and get the right medical attention.
