HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST WEEKEND

  • We are extremely proud of our Mini Girls section - which offers girls only rugby for girls in Years 3 to 6. This weekend was a watershed moment for the age group when they attended their first festival.

The event saw 10 clubs gather at our very generous hosts, Tonbridge Juddians, for a pitch up and play festival. It saw a mix of contact and non-contact activities, so there was something for everyone.

The Oaks girls did us all proud and, most importantly, had tremendous fun!

  • At the weekend, our U8s, 9s, 10s and 11s all sent teams to Tunbridge Wells who hosted a fantastic event.

Check out the video (left) for a few clips of the day - the highlight being Molly from under 11s, ripping the ball from an opposition player and bursting through a few more tackles to score a try. Great work Molly!

This was the first festival of 2022, and a great way to kick off!

  • The Under 13s boys took two squads to Haywards Heath on Sunday.

The Sussex club’s U13 ‘A’ team had been unbeaten in the last 3 years, so it was fantastic that the Mighty Oaks ‘A’ came away with a 5-2 victory. The ‘B’ team couldn’t quite gain victory, but did attack really well in their 4-7 loss.

  • The U14s squad continued where the 1st XV had left off in previous weeks with some fantastic games with Tunbridge Wells.

Wells have a very strong U14 squad, who won the reverse fixture earlier in the season, but the Oaks ‘A’ team came away with a fantastic 21-5 victory this time out. By all accounts the Oaks defence and attack was immense.

The ‘B’ squad also showed fantastic improvement since the away fixture before Christmas and whilst they lost this time out, they are on a strong upward trajectory.

  • The Under 15 ‘B’ squad followed their thrilling, close encounter in the mud, against T Wells last week to comfortably beat Sidcup ‘B’s 47-7 in the sun on Sunday.

  • On Friday the U15s hosted an absolutely fantastic quiz to raise well over £1500 towards their tour to Lyon. The money will be used to pay for tour shirts, transport in Lyon and tickets to see a rugby match and I’m sure will help to make it a Tour that the boys will remember for a long time.

A huge thanks from the Club go to Toby and, in particular Rob, Alison and Tom for being amazing quizmasters and organisers.

It was heart warming to see people from across multiple age groups supporting the event - another reason why rugby (and in particular, Sevenoaks Rugby) is so special.

The highlight of the evening was the ‘Name that Tune’ round which resulted in several spontaneous outbursts of song from all 100+ attendees, culminating in an epic rendition of “Sweet Caroline”!

World Book Day - Friday 4th March

With this week seeing world book day, why not check out some of these rugby reads.

Under 5s to Under 8s

For younger readers: a lot of stickers to do with rugby and backgrounds to stick them on!

Mr Men: The Rugby Match by Roger Hargreaves

A classic sport in a the classic Mr Men storyline style - this is short, colourful read for our Minis.

World Rugby Records by Chris Hawkes

Large book packed with facts and photos, in the style of the Guinness World Records books. Perfect for browsing and hoovering up facts.

The Rugby Zombies by Dan Anthony

3 boys go into the woods one night and find fourteen zombies dressed in Wales rugby tops. Rather than run in fear, the boys help the zombies. Funny and entertaining.7+

Under 9s and over

The Rugby Spirit by Gerard Siggins

A six-book series about a boy who is haunted by the spirits of rugby past. His ghostly teammates help him both solve the problems of the past and to progress his own game. For ages 9+

Pride and Penalties by Chris Higgins

This a great book about a girl who wants to be a rugby player, but her rugby-loving dad doesn’t take her seriously, meaning she needs to make a point... Sadly out of print as a book, but an excellent read on Kindle (ignore the cover art!). 9+

Rampaging Rugby

Packed with player tips, funny stories, irreverent explanations and black and white cartoons, Rampaging Rugby introduces both boys and girls to the game played in 119 countries and loved by 800 millions fans worldwide.

This Haynes manual focuses – in extraordinary detail – on Rugby Union. Every rule and every position of the pitch is dealt with in well-written and clear prose, supported by excellent diagrams. For the wannabe rugby expert, many of whom are children. 9+

Under 13s and over

Winger by Andrew Smith

About a boy who plays rugby, set in the USA. This book and its sequel, Stand Off, are the only older rugby novels out there for children, but does feature challenging attitudes from a group of boys towards girls in particular. Handle with care, though it is well-written – this is as much about girl-boy relationships as rugby. Only suitable for teenage readers, aged 13+

Many sports people’s autobiographies are not appropriate for children, but Johnny Wilkinson’s is. Wilkinson is a legend in the world game. His story is told with humility and reveals an excellent role-model for children. The first 80 pages focus on his involvement in the game as a child. 9+
