Girls Round-Robin at Old Colfeians
U13s, U15s & U18s went, played teams from Colfes, Beccahamians, Blackheath – mixed results, but they all had a good time and some fantastic performances. Especially great to be back playing properly again after so long!
U15 Girls Round-Robin at Old Colfeians
On a sunny and fresh early May afternoon the U15 girls played a series of round-robin matches on a bone-dry pitch.
Sevenoaks 2 Old Beccs 2 (non-contact)
In the opening "ready for rugby" game against Old Beccs things started slowly as both teams got to grips with the both-hands-around-the-waist and offload (touch) rules before Beccs took the lead down the right. Charlotte B then evened things up by finishing well through the inside right channel. The match finished all square following good work by Jaime down the right in gaining yards before feeding Charlotte B for her second to cancel out a Beccs try again down the right.
Dart/Old Colfeians 2 Sevenoaks 3 (non-contact)
In the next game of touch rugby the opposition built up an early head of steam as their star player inspired them to a 2-0 lead with both scores down the middle. Although they deserved the lead there was some questionable yard-gains from the key player as her "momentum" always ensured that she took an age to hit the deck often a full 10 yards ahead of the correct spot following the refs call! An eagle eyed Erin then sniffed out a great interception to sprint home from 30 yards despite a determined lone defensive chaser. In almost a carbon copy of her first Erin intercepted again but this time fed Charlotte B on the try line who had followed up in good support. The winning try was a real team effort with Anne-Marie touching it home a few yards from the line as the ball was worked well through the hands of most of the team!
Sevenoaks 4 Old Beccs 3
Again Sevenoaks went 1-0 down early doors as their big player powered through the middle taking out a few defenders and laying it on a plate. An always lively Libby was then unlucky to not break through on the left side before an opportunist Faye ran it home well on the right blindside. Imogen then put Oaks in the lead with some good running this time down the left blindside. A warm up tackle in the final third from Anne-Marie created a turnover for Imogen to sprint home to make it 3-1. Anne-Marie then nailed their star player in trademark fashion near the try line when she was going full throttle and a certain score looked on the cards! To her credit the big girl soon dusted herself down and growled before reducing the deficit to 3-2! Charlotte B then added a fourth from close in before Beccs' big player again got in from close in for a consolation.
Dart/Old Colfeians 2 Sevenoaks 1
In the final game of the day a weary and depleted Oaks team lost 2-1 but were a bit unlucky as Charlotte W looked harshly ajudged to not have touched the ball home in the tackle on the left byeline after a good run. The opponents star player made the most of the space involving herself in their 2 tries and Imogen salvaged things sniffing out some space after a turnover. The match was abondoned at half time due to injuries and knocks to most of the Oaks side!
There was some great moments today and thanks to all the girls and the coaching staff for putting on some much needed entertainment at the end of a difficult season with zero match time and endless lockdowns. There were only a couple of things to work on: 1) Communication on the pitch - some good kicks from Imogen would have been even better if a quick signal or codeword had gone to the wingers and linked to this there were also a couple of missed overlaps. 2) Try and support the ball carrier where possible and also get quicker support into the rucks. This is all easy for me to say from the sidelines and these are small tweaks only - this team have loads of talent and great team spirit - often coming from behind in games - and a big well done to Maddie and all the other forwards for helping out the other teams struggling for numbers. The pitch was hard and there were some battered bodies and aches and pains at the close and I think Oaks were down to 8 players v 9 in the last game! Roll on next season!
