Many members need no introduction to Steve Brook. Certainly those in the same year groups as Jamie or Will Brook will know Steve. Likewise, anyone who does the Mighty Oaks Lottery. Steve has helped to transform our lottery for all participants, bringing regular updates which are highly welcomed by the lucky winners. In fact, if you aren’t signed up for the Lottery, it will make Steve’s day if you get involved having read this profile piece.
Steve received the Knole Paddock Tankard Award at the 2026 Annual Awards Dinner for immense volunteering work during the 2025/2026 season. He’s now stepping into the additional role of Membership Secretary. Here is your opportunity to get to know Steve a bit better.
Question: How long have you been involved with Sevenoaks Rugby Club?
15 years
Who or what first brought you to the Club?
Both our children went to Lady Boswell's, where they would see Oaks players training on the Paddock and then asked to become involved. Our son Jamie joined first at Under 8s and Will as an Under 5.
And the rest as they say is history. What are Jamie and Will up to now?
Jamie played all the way through the Club, from Under 8s and up through the year groups and into the Academy. Having left for University, he returned and is now a member of the Senior performance squad. Jamie has played in the all-conquering Oaks 3rd XV for two seasons in a row. Will followed the same path up through the year groups and into the Academy and he is now at University.
What highlights do you have from your involvement with Sevenoaks Rugby Club?
The social side, camaraderie and making friends on the touchline from all the children's matches, events and activities. We made friends while watching the boys play who are now lifelong friends. In fact, many of us are still on the touchline, or. more accurately, in the bar, and sometimes on the touchline…
Any specific magical stand out moments?
The Magnificent ‘Seven’ Oaks Tour to Barnstaple in (2013?) stewarded by Sheriff O’Keefe. Around 1,000 of us headed west and broke the Guiness World Record for most tourists. The cherry on the cake was Will scoring a winning try in the dying seconds for the then Under 8s, to win the Tournament.
The other interesting one is the washed out Isle of Wight Tour, where not a single game was played yet we stayed for the duration.
What's inspired you to take on the daunting mantle of Membership Secretary (and the Club lottery)
Having retired I have a bit more time to give back to the Club, and was asked to help look at the Club's data and help tidy everything up. My background in IT and data systems helped alongside some experience in my previous Club / former playing days as Membership Secretary.
Tell us more about those former playing days?
I played for Old Olavians RFC. While I didn't start off playing, my friends being very social roped me in one day. I debuted as a winger, and I kicked the ball through and scored a try. They then forced me to buy a jug of beer and I have never looked back. As years went by, I gradually got nearer to the ball and less far to run. When injury forced me out of an England call up, I was playing between the centre and the flank.
Any final words?
If I knew then what I now know about Membership, I would never have accepted this role. In all seriousness, I did do some other things when I first retired, I wanted to give something back to the Club and I have never felt more welcomed and appreciated than I am by Sevenoaks Rugby Club.
Cheers Steve and thank you from everyone at the Club for all the work you put in behind the scenes as an award-winning volunteer!
