Together Through the Storm

Last Saturday’s 41–10 win away at Worthing took our 1st XV to five wins from five. What pleased me most was our response to the challenges thrown at us and the performance we delivered.

Strong winds and heavy rain tested our skills and tactical approach, demanding physicality, relentless work rate and a desire to deliver for each other. The game was behind closed doors, without our travelling support, while a fallen tree at the driveway entrance caused a lengthy half-time disruption. Throughout, the players stayed focused.

Our approach was clear: pressure rugby. Win territory through our structured kicking game, minimise rugby in our own half and use defensive and set piece pressure to force errors and regain possession further up the pitch. Then take our chances, keep the scoreboard ticking over and make Worthing chase the game. We executed that approach with 42% possession, kicking the ball 28 times.

Our set piece contributed to that approach, with 74% completion across our 19 attacking lineouts, compared with Worthing’s 64% from 11. Regaining possession through our defensive set piece created attacking opportunities. Our error rate was 25% against their 41%, and we converted seven of our 12 attacking 22 entries—a 58% success rate.

Defensively, we completed 158 tackles at a 92% completion rate, with players working incredibly hard for each other and getting back into position to contribute again. It was a performance that made me very proud and a day the players and staff will remember with real enjoyment—a shame our supporters couldn’t be there to share it.

Our 2nd XV overcame a tough Dover side to make it five from five, while our 3rd XV secured a last-minute home win against Whitstable 1st XV. Congratulations to the players and staff—results reflecting the quality, commitment and hard work across our senior men’s squad.

Today brings an incredibly tough test against a talented London Scottish side. It will be great to welcome Chris Rolfe back for the battle of the Rolfes! We must be at our very best, bringing that same togetherness and clarity into today’s performance.

Thank you to our supporters, sponsors and everyone contributing to the Oaks. Your backing makes a real difference, and we look forward to hearing the Paddock in full voice.

Enjoy the match, and come on you Oaks!
