A New Season, One Senior Men’s Squad

After a long pre-season, extended by the delayed start to the league campaign, it’s exciting to have league rugby back at the Paddock. Since coming together in June, we have been installing our game model and layering detail into every area of our play. At the same time, we have been building the conditioning and physical robustness needed for demanding league campaigns across our 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs.

That commitment has been clear at training, where we have regularly had 50 to 60 players working together. There is strong, healthy competition for places, and players move between our three XVs as they push one another to improve. We are one senior men’s squad, working towards our squad objectives and raising standards across every side.

It has been great to see so many players return from last season, alongside new arrivals, Academy graduates and players coming back from university. We are still working to bring in a couple more players in specific positions as the season gets under way. Our pre-season fixtures have helped us develop our understanding of one another and test our game model in match conditions. There is no substitute for league rugby, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we respond to that challenge today.

I believe there is huge potential in this group. The season ahead will bring its tests, and we will learn plenty along the way. That is part of what makes it exciting: seeing how far we can go together.

Olly Green begins the season as our new captain. He has the respect of the squad and will lead by example. I also want to thank Scotty for the outstanding job he has done as captain over the past two seasons. He remains one of our most important leaders, and his experience and voice will continue to mean a great deal to this group.

Our 2nd and 3rd XVs begin their league campaigns today too, away at Beccehamian and Gravesend. I wish both sides well.

Thank you to our coaches, medical team, volunteers and sponsors for everything they have done to get us to this point. And thank you to everyone here supporting us today. The Paddock is a special place on a matchday. Your support and noise lift the players, and we are looking forward to playing in front of you.

Enjoy the match, and come on you Oaks!

Adam Bowman

Director of Rugby

Olly Green Named 1st XV Captain, with Thanks to Scotty Sedgwick

Sevenoaks RFC is pleased to announce that Olly Green will captain the Senior Men’s 1st XV for the 2026/27 season.

Olly takes on the role as the Oaks prepare for their opening league fixture at home to Maidenhead this Saturday. Director of Rugby Adam Bowman said: “Olly will give everything to the role. He has the full support of the coaches and the squad, and we’re looking forward to seeing him lead the team this season.”

The club would also like to thank Scott “Scotty” Sedgwick for his brilliant work as 1st XV captain over the past two seasons. He has led from the front, earning the respect of his teammates, opponents and match officials.

Scotty’s contribution to Sevenoaks goes back more than ten years. He has grown with the squad and the club, been part of three promotions and remained a consistent presence through it all. His commitment extends beyond matchdays: he can often be found at the club on a Sunday watching the Academy.

“Scotty has given an enormous amount to this group, and I’m hugely grateful for the way he has led us,” Adam added. “He sets an example through his commitment, his standards and how much he cares about the club. Scotty remains one of the most important leaders in our squad and a key member of our player leadership group. We’ll continue to rely on his experience and voice, both in supporting Olly and in helping the whole squad achieve what we want this season.”

Congratulations, Olly, and thank you, Scotty. We’re looking forward to the season ahead with you both playing such important roles in the squad.

3 Club Members take on 61 Mile Charity Ride

3 Club Members take on 61 Mile Charity Ride

On Saturday 19 September, three Sevenoaks RFC members are riding the British Heart Foundation's London to Brighton Off Road Bike Ride: 61 miles from Apps Court Farm in Surrey, across the North and South Downs, finishing at Hove Lawns. It's Europe's largest charity mountain bike ride.

For Greg Smith, who coaches at the club, the reason is close to home. A few years ago his mum had a heart attack, followed by a double bypass. She recovered, and she's still very much around — something that's only possible because of decades of research the British Heart Foundation helped pay for. Bypass surgery, the drugs that keep her well, the scans that caught the problem: none of it came from nowhere.

For Dean, Greg and Oli, preparation has been, largely theoretical — between work, coaching and family, training has mostly consisted of good intentions and a nervous look at the route profile. All three expect to feel every mile.

They'll be riding in Sevenoaks colours, with thanks to the club and its sponsors for getting behind the ride.

If you can spare anything, it goes straight to the BHF, and Gift Aid adds 25% if you're a UK taxpayer: https://www.justgiving.com/team/dean-oli-greg-100

Rest in peace Mike Mauduit

We are deeply saddened to hear of the Passing of Mike Mauduit (Who many knew as Mouse) at the age of 97.

Mike was a well loved and familiar face at the club and had been a member of Sevenoaks RFC for close to 80 years having joined in the 1949/50 Season.

As a Player he moved up through the teams and became a regular in the 1st XV on the wing being both fast and an uncompromising tackler. (Pictured below From the 1st XV 1956/57 Season)

1st XV Team Photo 1956-57

A Lasting Memory for many at the club would be the during the 1980/81 Season When Mike was joined with two of his four sons in the Acorns squad. Mike’s son Chris recalls ‘‘It was without doubt the best season I had at Sevenoaks.  We had a very good team with a couple of Hunts, a sprinkling of Shirtcliffs and many other old hands plus some up and coming youngsters.  We only lost 4 games and it was very special to play alongside my father.’’.

Mike on his 90th Birthday

The Funeral is being held at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Sevenoaks @11:00 on Tuesday 29th September. Afterwards a celebration is being held at SRFC where all are welcome to come and remember him.

U23s Reunite for Entertaining Draw Against TJs

Our U23s enjoyed a fantastic game against TJs on Sunday 6 September, with 28 players currently away at university coming together to represent the club—including four sets of brothers!

It was brilliant to bring the group back together, remain connected with the Oaks and play out an entertaining 31–31 draw. Plenty of future Senior Men’s squad players in the making!

A huge thank you to Toby Walter for organising the fixture and bringing everyone together.

Our next U23s fixture will take place at the beginning of January.
