Ms Davison, Sevenoaks School - World's Best Teacher

Member_SevSchool_Logo.jpg

We all remember our time at school, regardless how long ago it was and most of us will remember that one teacher, or perhaps more, that influenced or made a difference to our lives, perhaps even shaping the course of what we went on to do after school. We are fortunate to have Sevenoaks School as one of our sponsors and they in turn are even more fortunate to have Ms Cat Davison as part of their teaching cohort. Ms Davison has been shortlisted for the world’s “best teacher” in a competition set up by The Varkey Foundation, currently in its seventh year, which was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher and their contribution to the profession.

A critical thinking teacher, Ms Davison’s application of curricula applying ethics to action prompted a surge of 120 student-led projects. Further afield, her work with teachers and students in Ghana and the UK has led to a network of 42 community-led solar-powered libraries, EduSpots.

The top 50 teachers will be narrowed down further and 10 finalists will be announced in October, with overall winners revealed at an awards ceremony in Paris in November.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sevenoaks School for their ongoing support of Sevenoaks RFC, both as a sponsor and also for allowing the use of their facilities for training.

Calling a Community Rugby Manager

e951f53b-0d71-4315-9311-2ce885a56928.png

We believe rugby acts as a strong bedrock to many, providing a family and home away from home, a set of friends and teammates from different schools and backgrounds - when you put on your club shirt, you are part of that team and you play together as one.

Sevenoaks Rugby Club deliver rugby to club members throughout the season, but also look to take our beloved sport beyond The Paddock and out in to the wider community, to a variety of groups across all education sectors, both primary and secondary. Delivering community coaching camps and festivals during school holidays as well as delivering high quality provision before, during and after school in term time.

With this in mind, we are looking to recruit a Community Rugby Manager to lead our community rugby programme, reporting directly to the Director of Rugby. If you think this might suit you, or perhaps you know somebody that might be interested, please see full job description below and send an email with a short covering letter and full CV to coachajbowman@gmail.com

The next step....?

There is often a debate in the club house, often after an Acorns game, as to what to do next when our knees hang up their boots and retire from full contact rugby…… We believe we have the answer right here - INDOOR BOWLS!

It’s a sport with no restriction placed on the athlete. Age, gender, experience, physical ability - all can be catered for with players ranging from complete beginners to county and even national competition level.

Located in Hollybush, The Sevenoaks & District Indoor Bowls Club is having an open day on Saturday the 2nd October from 10am to 4pm and would love anybody interested in having a go to pop by.

Wooden Spoon Kent - Sevenoaks 4 Ball

IMG_9598a.jpg

Just over £9,000 was raised at Wooden Spoon Kent’s charity golf competition this year, a charity supported by Sevenoaks RFC. The day was hosted by Redlibbets on Friday 27th August, 2021.

Representing Kent’s favourite rugby club were Mark Smith, Alec Valentine, Gerry Diebel and Miles Hayward, whose efforts were rewarded with a 5th place overall, bagging an impressive “best two scores” of 99!

Wooden Spoon work tirelessly raising much needed funds for projects across the country for disadvantaged children, work that heavily relies on support from the rugby community and clubs such as ours.

Well done Team!

GBWR #1 GOLD

image1.jpeg

On the 5th November 2017 Sevenoaks Rugby Club hosted Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby at the start of a campaign to raise £10,000 to help them get to the Tokyo Paralympic Games after they had been stripped of their funding following the Rio games. Today, Sunday the 29th August 2021, the squad have proven their mettle and repaid the belief that we all had in them by beating the favourites, the United States, 54-49 for GOLD!

Sevenoaks Rugby Club played a small but not insignificant part in helping keep our GBWR team on the path to Tokyo - we are so proud of all they have achieved and look forward to hosting them again in the not too distant future!!

Running for RFU Injured Players Foundation - London Half Marathon

Michael Hebden, one of SRFCs senior squad coaches is running a Half Marathon and is looking for some sponsorship for this worthy cause.

On Sunday 1st August, I am running the London Landmarks Half Marathon, raising money for the RFU Inured Players Foundation, a fantastic rugby charity who support players who sustain catastrophic injuries whilst playing. This will be my first running event and it will certainly be a challenge due to a lack of training in recent weeks!!

I'd be hugely grateful to anyone who can spare some money to sponsor me and support such a worthwhile cause.’

Please click here and give generously.

Or if you want to forward the link … https://rfuipf.enthuse.com/pf/michael-hebdenllhm2021

The benefits of rugby; physical social and mental are significant, and in my opinion, far outweigh the injury risks that are associated with the game. There are occasions when players suffer serious injuries and the support which the RFU Injured Players Foundation provides is not just critical but also a sign of the life-long bonds and togetherness that exists within the rugby community.

Having enjoyed running as my only method of exercise during the lockdown, I was keen to enter a race for the first time. Having never raced before, or attempted a half marathon, it seemed the perfect opportunity to raise money for an incredibly important rugby charity.
