Chairman and Director of Rugby Report - 2021/22 Season

Chairman’s Report May 2022

To all members

Well, what a season that was!

In many ways the best ever, a fantastic re-start after the awful experience of Covid, which really tested the resilience of individuals and clubs like ours, who operate a fine balance of resources between essentials and ‘nice to haves’ aiming to at least break even.

Some amazing successes on the field are detailed below, led by Nigel Gumbleton’s all conquering 1st XV, who were crowned champions of London Premier, a league in which we had thought mere survival would be an achievement.

As we approach our centenary, playing standards throughout the club are higher than ever before.

The quality of our coaching is outstanding; in particular Adam Bowman, Paul Dawson, Mike Hebden, Alex Rolfe and Tom Swallow take a bow.

Right now, The Mighty Oak is the tallest tree in the amateur forest.

This has brought us a new challenge, since from National Division 2 upwards, all clubs pay their 1st XV a match fee (typically £150) plus expenses in return for a contract to play only for that club.

This puts me personally in direct conflict with my long-held belief that professional rugby is only sustainable if the wage bill is comfortably covered by extra spectator/commercial revenue, rather than unpredictable (though welcome!) donations.

Apart from the obvious financial pressure (the cost of 1st XV wages and expenses at level 4 is around @125k pa) I believe it to be extremely divisive within clubs, which must put money first in everything they do from that point on.

We have seen the demise of several good traditionally strong clubs who went down this route but when the ‘donation’ tap is switched off there is nothing left.

So, the challenge is to maintain and believe in the spirit and fitness in the squad which won us so many tight games.

The good news is that 54 players started pre-season strength and conditioning training at Better Body Group gym this week, just days after the last game of the season- a cracking start.

This fundamental commitment to supporting fitness and injury rehab is open to all players and lasts the whole season, paid for by the club through a sponsorship contra deal; a great example of how we can attract and keep quality players without paying them.

We aim to make the passion, camaraderie, culture and player support facilities at Sevenoaks irresistible, to reinforce that fast-declining but crucial team value- loyalty.

Without that, why do we play the game?

If this appears old fashioned I do understand and hope you will appreciate that I must stay true to what I see to be the best interests of your Club and mine. Should there be a determination to pursue this pay to play route, I would need to do further soul searching before being able to lead the Club into that ‘semi-professional’ future with conviction.
It would certainly only be on the condition that the Club finds the incremental revenue to pay players without borrowing money or hiking membership fees. Furthermore, to make provisions for paying 1st XV players by reducing much needed investment elsewhere, for instance kit, equipment and facilities that benefit our boys and girls in the Juniors or senior players outside the highest performing cohort, would be too high a price to pay.

My first position is for every player young and old to have everything they need and more to enjoy our Club, to access sport and to appreciate the true value of the amateur game.

Like many clubs, we celebrate our volunteers, and I would like to thank them all, beginning with the committee, which has been very strong this year.

We mourned the sudden passing of both Jonny Wilkinson and Lee Adamson and are very glad that Hils has stepped up to help with the Acorns after a really tragic time for her- she knows the club will always be here for her.

Replacing Jonny as Treasurer is Charlie Mouncer; we have been really lucky to persuade another qualified accountant and partner of Charlie Naismith -Mighty Oak and 1st XV prop- to look after our finances.

Charlie brings tight financial control with such state-of-the-art aids as Xero accounting software to work closely with Brebners Accountants and keep a very accurate eye on our cashflow.

The club will always maintain a strong cash reserve position- affordability of all expenditure will be tested rigorously.

Greg Gorrill has introduced a valuable new perspective to the ongoing deliberation on the direction of our club and grabbed the comms role with alacrity and panache.

GG has effectively increased the ‘click through’ and ‘opened’ stats of our newsletter and website in partnership with the social media and post-match interview team of Jack Curnow and Sevenoaks’ answer to Davina McCall, Club Skipper’s wife Liv Gumbleton.

Fitzy is as unpredictable and incisive as ever, bringing valuable One Club perspective from his recent role as Head of Juniors and taking on the very challenging commercial role- almost impossible for a volunteer.

The eminence grise that is our President Wooly also provides wise thoughts as well as regular lunchtime merriment, not least when we were graced with the presence of RFU Chief Exec Bill Sweeney and President Jeff Blackett.

More often heard but not seen from his perch overlooking Sydney Harbour, Andy Nicholls keeps us compliant and efficient as the longest serving committee member of all time.

The 100+ volunteer junior coaches, led brilliantly by John, Rosie and the Henley clan en masse, have long been a legend of our club.

No thanks can be enough for the time you all commit to 825 registered young players now aged from 5 upwards- thanks one and all- it’s a remarkable thing you do for the kids in all weathers.

1st XV match days would be a shambles without Derek Arnold organising the team of ground stewards, scoreboard and storing of equipment- thanks all, please put your hands up again next year!

Clarky is our meticulous Child Protection Officer, and also worked tirelessly during Covid helping the club stay the right side of the infamous Johnson-Starmer law, ensuring no parties during lockdown!

The bar and kitchen have had some record days this season, and that wouldn’t happen without Donna, Colin and Diane’s teams- ‘coping under pressure’ doesn’t get close to describing what they do so well- just so we can all have fun together and entertain other clubs with superb quality catering and busy bar atmosphere.

Diane’s brilliant Soft Play Café is also now a significant contributor to club funds.

The list of people who give up their time for the club is endless, but I’d like to give a big thank you to Paul Vizard (Fixtures Sec) Alan Crane, (Referee liaison) and Andy McClinton (Subs admin) without whose efforts there would be no games- thanks fellas!

Will Rosier will kill me for mentioning that he not only fixed the embarrassing cold showers issue, but also bought and donated the cosy woodburning stove to the club.

Similarly, Andy Browning, who personally contributed hugely to the recent clubhouse refurbishment- thanks guys.

I believe it is important for everyone to acknowledge and be grateful for unprompted gestures like this, particularly from past players, that make us what we are.

The Club’s playing ambitions include:

1st XV competing effectively at National League levels.

2nd XV entering the competitive England Championship at Level 7 or 8

3rd XV highly active Senior Men’s social side

4thXV more matches for the Acorns Vets

Senior Women’s team to be introduced

Boys Academy to be best in the Southeast

Growing our formidable Girls Rugby section across multiple age groups

Continued growth and quality of Youth and Mini Rugby

Renewed community rugby outreach programme with local schools

Ensuring our success in these goals and our mission to bring access to sport to as many as possible of all abilities, while also making our spectator experience and facilities the best they can be, requires further investment and commercial focus.

This is where Adam Bowman’s new full-time role is critical, and we look forward to him bringing the same level of quality and organisation to our community outreach, sponsorship and rugby camps programme that he has shown as Director of Rugby.

Sponsorship is in great shape thanks to Sarah Bowyer, a huge thank you to you all, and in particular to Savills, our headline sponsor for the past 8 years.

We have new initiatives including Mighty Oaks Holiday Rugby Camps for children U7-U15 (Schools Years 2-10) starting in July, and the 1925 Club, an opportunity for any member to support the Club with a significant donation and to become more closely involved in backing our future Junior and Senior success.

As always, I welcome your opinion on any matter- please email direct tn@landequity.co

Meanwhile, I wish you all a restful summer- see you on the balcony!

Sevenoaks Rugby

Director of Rugby playing report by Adam Bowman

I am delighted to be able to report on a season of remarkable and significant successes right across the board. It was great to be able to return to a normal year of rugby after the interruptions brought by the pandemic, which of course put rugby into perspective. In 2021/22 the Club has been able to provide essential sporting and social engagement for many in the Sevenoaks community, and it has been a thrilling journey from Minis Girls & Boys right up to the First XV & the Acorns.

Before getting into the details, I would like to say thank you and well done to everyone involved at the Club, the committee, clubhouse staff, our excellent coaches & physios, players, social media team, volunteers and of course our supporters!  Without your tremendous efforts and support we would be unable to function, coach and play this wonderful game.

Our Mini & Youth Girls & Boys, led by John Henley, have had tremendous fun and success throughout the season.  Our Minis offering is all about our players enjoying themselves, making friends, developing new skills, and getting prepared for Youth Rugby, and our coaches have done a superb job in providing an inclusive environment where players can achieve this.

Our Youth Girls & Boys have also had some real highlights this season, our U12 Boys won the Kent Shield, our U13 & U14 Boys won the Kent Plate.  Our superb U13 Girls became Champions of the Kent Cup & the Kent Sevens, simply brilliant!  Our U15 Boys had a great season too, winning the Kent League, became runners up of the Kent 7s Plate, and finished off by a tour to Lyon!  Huge congratulations to all players and coaches involved!

Our Academy Boys Squad continues to thrive with 120 players signed up and with over 80 players regularly training and playing week in week out, led superbly by Alex Rolfe & Paul Dawson.

We of course want our Academy sides to be as successful as we can be on the pitch and to reach the latter stages of competitions, but we are also really focussed on preparing and developing our players for senior rugby and adult life!

The Academy 1st XV progressed through the first and second rounds of the National Cup with impressive victories over Old Reigatians and Heathfield, but unfortunately lost to Tonbridge Juddians in the 3rd round who went on to reach the final.

The Under 16s won the Brentwood Tournament in sublime fashion and recorded victories over Medway and Chobham before a narrow defeat away at Old Elthamians.

After Christmas, the Academy turned its attention to the Kent Competitions. For the Academy 1st XV they finished a respectable 3rd place in the Kent League, became runners up of the Kent 7s Cup, and the U16s went unbeaten to claim the title of Kent Champions.

Our Academy Girls Squad continues to grow, partnering with Old Colfeians RFC and Dartfordians RFC this season.  They reached the final of the Kent Cup and the Kent 7s Plate final, well done to all the players and coaches involved.  As a club, we are really excited and committed to growing our Academy Girls offering and have some exciting plans in place for the future.

Our Senior Squad has had a remarkable season, with 40-50 training week in week out since July, on the training pitch and in the gym with our partners Better Body Group.

The commitment and consistency shown by the squad has been hugely impressive!

Our 1st XV became champions of the London & Southeast Premier league, our 2nd XV became champions of the Kent Invicta league, and the squad also won the Kent Cup.

It really has been an incredible season, and everyone involved should be very proud of what we have all achieved, we did this as one squad!  I am pleased to say that the RFU has accepted our 2nd XV into the league pyramid, and as of next season our 2nd XV will be competing at either Level 7 or 8, which is huge news as we have struggled to find regular competitive fixtures.

Our Acorns returned after a long break due to the pandemic, and huge thanks to Miles Hayward, Hills Everitt and Tim Golds for all the hard work you have put into the group this season.  It has been a challenge to find fixtures for our Acorns this season, but we did manage to play a couple of fixtures in the Kent Vets competition and reached the final where we unfortunately lost to a very good Westcombe Park side.

Pitch-side brain scans aim to make sports safer

Jess Drage, a football player for Actonian Football Club, has tried out the device

Three rugby union clubs in England are to begin trialling scanning technology to monitor players' brain health.

Researchers hope a device which measures brain patterns could help medical personnel spot and manage concussion, and make sports safer.

The work is still in its infancy, but the idea is to get a baseline scan to use for comparison if an injury occurs.

It is one of a number of projects aimed at improving how contact sports deal with concussion risk.

The WAVi device involves a series of sensors being placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity, which produces a set of readings. It is one of several similar devices being developed around the world.

East London Rugby Club, Cornish Pirates and Sevenoaks Rugby Club are taking part in the trial.

The initiative is backed by not-for-profit organisation Love of the Game, whose president is former English rugby union player Simon Shaw. The organisation's chairman is Laurence Geller, the ministerial adviser appointed by government to examine concussion in sport.

Bowman's Blog - 22/04/22

Well, here we are the final games of the season have arrived with the First XV already promoted to Level 4, National League 2. This has been a great season, with the Second XV also finishing as champions of the Kent Invicta league, as well as being through to the final of the Kent Cup which takes place on Sunday 1st May.

I want to take a moment to thank all the players, coaches, club volunteers and supporters for their relentless commitment and hard work during the season. Without each of your contributions, we would not have been able to deliver the exciting rugby on the pitch you have seen from all our teams. Thank you.

That said the season is not over, there is still a job to do. This weekend sees the Firsts welcome Hertford to the Paddock, where one point will see us crowned Champions of London & SE. We are of course determined to win the game, with thoughts of a losing bonus point only not on our agenda!!! Cliché alert – we are focused on playing the game not the occasion. You may remember back to the very first match of this campaign, when Herford beat us convincingly when we visited Herefordshire. They have had a very good season and are still in with a chance of promotion themselves. We are expecting a tough game against a highly motivated opposition.

The boys had a week off after the narrow victory over Maidenhead, where it was fair to say we rode our luck a little to secure the win. However, as on so many occasions this season, we got the job done while not playing at our best. We have prepared well this week with a number of players having recovered from injuries for me to have some selection headaches.

The weather on Saturday looks set to be warm and dry, and we are expecting a big crowd for this final game, with the players doing their best to get the points we need and play attractive rugby. We look forward to your support on what is a special day for Sevenoaks Rugby Club.

A WARM WELCOME TO HERTFORD RFC

Today we afford a traditional SRFC warm welcome to all players, officials and supporters of Hertford RFC as they visit Knole Paddock for just the second time.

This is a special day for us as we bask in the knowledge that Adam’s 1st XV squad has gained a promotion unprecedented in our history. However we still have to clinch top spot unequivocally and today’s opposition also have their eyes on a potential promotion slot. So there is much to play for by both sides.

To add more spice to today’s match we have played Hertford three times now, with one win, one loss and one draw, as well as 49 points for and 50 against.  So this promises to be a cracking fixture with which to break the deadlock and close an exceptionally competitive and successful season for both clubs.

Old Hertfordians RFC was established in 1932, resulting from the desire of Hertford GS alumni wishing to continue playing rugby after leaving school.  In those days they were a nomadic bunch playing on six different grounds up to the end of 1949.

They then moved to their present home in Hoe Lane by purchasing that land which, on reflection, was the canniest move they could have made.

Facilities at the start were pretty rudimentary but in 1966 their existing pavilion was built and in 1972, with fewer and fewer Old boys coming through they renamedthemselves Hertford RFC.

When the professional era dawned in 1995, Hertford “committed to achieve a level of management and professional coaching necessary to sustain a position as one of the largest rugby clubs in Hertfordshire, and to offer comprehensive facilities to junior and senior players alike”.  Such words can easily be repeated for SRFC, so we share identical ambitions for our respective counties and beyond.

Level 5 status was achieved in 2001 and then three seasons later promotion to Level 4.  Hertford haven’t been lower than Level 5 since and, in line with our own modus operandi, are representative of what modern rugby clubs can aspire to.

If Oaks win today this would be our 16th successive win, which will equal the record set by the 1st XV in September ’95 and which covered three separate seasons - three wins in Spring ’94, our “perfect” season of 94/95 and the first match of ‘95/96.  Records are made to be broken so if we surmount today’s considerable obstacle we stand on the threshold of rewriting our own history.  This particular contemplated landmark brings to mind our Club’s ultimate unbeaten streak in the last century and fashioned by an unlikely and unheralded group of “social” players.  Their tilt at history can be read elsewhere in the programme.

CHARLIE’S ANGELS?

Our current all conquering 1st XV have achieved unprecedented heights this season and are on the brink of equalling our top side’s record League winning streak set over 25 years ago.  We were playing at a lower level than now which makes today’s potential milestone even more commendable, but records stand whenever achieved and are there to be broken.

Thinking of such a record those of us longer in the tooth than most can reminisce on the most unlikely of similar achievements created by one of our lower teams also 25 years ago.  In those days Sevenoaks RFC fielded six sides every week and on 1st February, 1997 our Extra A XV (the 4th team of the 6) lost to Cranbrook thus ending an epic 42 matches unbeaten run stretching back almost two years to March 1995.

With few if any players at that level training it was up to the Captain and a few trusted lieutenants to pull together a motley crew and send them out to battle each week.

Charlie Marchetti, in those days probably the only rugby player of Italian origin we knew but speaking in a broad Scottish accent, was the inspirational Captain of his sidedespite only  jetting in almost every Friday evening from his work in Milan.

In Charlie’s first report he said “our mission was to enjoy rugby” and he carried that mantra throughout his tenure.  Familiar names of yesteryear like Russ GoaterAlex Sherman and Richard Ewence crop up in Charlie’s extensive reviews while of current luminaries Billy Belither, Roger McKerlie and Paul Vizard also receive due praise.

He has a full paragraph on Rob Pearl who “first and foremost deserves special mention as unsung hero.  Only through his persistence and patience were we able to field a side consistently each Saturday, despite the inevitable changes since selection”.

Of the non players, Chris Birch “has to be recognised as a cornerstone to our triumph.  In his weekly role as “God” he was instrumental in helping to keep the important nucleus of our team together.”  Charlie was also extremely proud that President Peter Hunt and ChairmanAlan Townsend showed such a keen regard in the team’s performances.

It is also so heartening that the majority of those mentioned above are still with us in fact and in spirit.

Charlie also wrote: “One consistent factor throughout has been the infrastructure of our Rugby Club which we could rely on to provide the framework where we have built our success.”  So in many ways plus ca change, plus la meme chose as Mike Wooldridge and Trevor Nicholson and the present Committee are equally proud of every team that represents the Mighty Oaks. We are living with head spinning success these days and with a history of inclusiveness that is the envy of our fellow rugby clubs.

There is no better way to close than quote Charlie’s finalsign off after his unbeaten season of 1995/96:  Thank you for your friendship and support – FORZA!

Played 42 Won 41Drawn 1Lost 0       Points For 1,576     Against 390

Well here we go. I am going to start by saying we approach this weekend like any other. The senior squad travels to Maidenhead for the penultimate games of the season, whilst the Acorns play local rivals Westcombe Park in their Cup Final, held at Maidstone RFC. Our 1s and 2s preparation this week has been focused on meeting a strong Berkshire opponent, whose first team in particular has seen a significant improvement in results as the season has progressed. And in the case of the Acorns, I think every Oaks supporter will be urging them on to beat Combe!

All that said, I can’t do my blog without mentioning and being excited that the First XV will be promoted and crowned Champions if we secure a 5 point win on Saturday. Cliche alert…….we have to play the game, not the occasion😀, and if we are anything other than at the top of our game, we will not capture the victory. Maidenhead has some very good players so we will need to be at the level we showed last week when scoring 9 tries against Tring, to be sure to win. Yes it has been a great season, but the job is not done.

The brand of rugby we are playing is as a result of hard work by the players and coaches, honed on the training ground over the season (and previous seasons) and has involved the whole squad contributing. For all 24 games and the 2 to come, we rely on ‘One Squad’ to get us over the line. The boys are focused on Maidenhead and will do their best to bring the win, promotion and champions crown to the Paddock.

A bit of a journey round the M25 and M4 to our Thames Valley hosts, but all support will be welcome. The weather looks ok, so where else would you want to go on a Saturday afternoon! Kick off at 3pm.
COYO
Adam.

PS- Please get down to Maidstone on Sunday to support the Acorns, who as I may have mentioned, we would like to beat Westcombe Park!!!

Acorns - Cup Final - Sunday 10th April 2022

Sunday 10th April 2022
The Mote, Willow Way

CUP Final: 4.00pm

Sevenoaks     v     Westcombe Park

*** From little Acorns grow old OAKS***

I have often been asked why the Sevenoaks Veterans team are called the "Acorns" and whilst the story has changed over many years it seems it is because once you reach the dizzy heights of Vets Rugby you like to roll back the years and pretend you can still play with the skill and pace of younger days!

Most of us started our rugby through mini and junior ages at some point although for some of us there are only black and white photos to prove this and nothing on social media! Vets Rugby is officially from the age of 35 and you can play for as long as the body is able which is usually shorter than the mind thinks it can! You usually find the changing room is over flowing with tape and deep heat and strapping the old muscles can sometimes take longer than the warm up! Jack Mortassagne has played 25 seasons for the Vets with Rob Thurnell a close 23 seasons! I'll let you do the maths..

The Acorns is a very special part of Sevenoaks Rugby and you will find some big names on the honours list like Trevor, Woolybags, Howard, Roger and the man credited with starting it back in 1975 Peter Hunt (deceased) The longest serving Captain/Manager was Alasdair Bray from 96/97 to 03/04 for 8 seasons and his reign saw the Acorns compete in the "Evergreen cup" reaching the finals a number of times but failing to win the main cup, although we were plate cup winners in 2010 (see photos).

There have been many tours over the years visiting France, Spain, Georgia, Belgium, Holland and even Bahamas and South Africa! The touring and social side is such a big part of vets rugby and there has been a strong representation at international and national competitions with a number of Sevenoaks Vets representing Kent at last years National vets wooden spoon tournament - Kent crowned the winners!

More recently the Acorns have enjoyed enormous success in the Spitfire Kent Vets competition, reaching the finals day 5 out of the last 6 years and wining the plate once and the main cup twice - hoping to make it a hattrick on Sunday! And whilst the pace of the game is slightly slower than the 1st team! There is no less passion or desire to win and now and again you will see a piece of skill as if we were in our 20's again! The lads would be grateful for any support on Sunday and if you previously played and miss the smell of deep heat and the beers after a good game then please contact me, we are always looking for more people to discuss "How good we used to be!"

We are always looking for new players - if you are interested, please contact:
