Sunday 19th March 2017. Another busy day at the office.

All the players did incredibly well today, particularly given we were so short of players. At Old Colfe’s the two teams between them won 6, drew 1 and lost 1. At Edenbridge the two teams won 4, drew 2 and lost 2.

Please send photos for the blog to jane.sevenoaksrugby@gmail.com.

Edenbridge Match Report (team 2)

Team 2: Jamie Wishart, Peter Lines, Ben Beazleigh, Edward Neale, Bruno Millward, Edward Stangroome, Jack Macleish, Mitchel Short

The guys started off in the usual Sevenoaks first game frame of mind, a Sunday walk rather than intense game of rugby. Typically we were pitched against our old adversaries, TJs - a team it would appear who do not understand the mixed team requirements!  Throughout the game the boys tried but were over run by some very good rucking. With Mitch being the only 1 true ruck in our game, we conceded 5-0 to TJs :-(

Next up after the usual ruck and tackle practice were Edenbridge - the home squad.  The Oaks came out firing on all cylinders. With some good rucking coming from Peter and Edward N as well as some pure heart tackles from Jamie and Jack, the team were able to break through with a try each from Bruno, Ben and Mitch. 3-0 to the Mighty Oaks

Coming straight after our 2nd game victory, a quick drink and back on to play Tunbridge Wells. The boys were riding high!  Some good tackles coupled with straight power running, Jack gets on the score sheet first. Now Oaks are starting to try and use the pitch - Ben held out on the wing gaining space and driving through to our second try. A second half glitch let the kick off beat them with an easy try to TW. Even so, with great tackling from both Edwards and expert rucking from Peter, confidence was high and Bruno showed it, driving forward to put two more on the scoresheet. 4-1 final score.

Last game was back against our foe - TJs (team2). The guys were not willing to lose this one and played with pure heart. Some end to end stuff but Oaks showing some good defensive lines and with true grit, overturned the initial play to get Peter through for his first try. Judds did manage to get one back but we did not make it easy for them and that only drove us forward with mor tries from Jamie, Ben and Bruno. Ending the game 5-1 to Oaks.

Won 3, lost 1 - a great day of rugby

Edenbridge match report

Oaks 1 team : Liam Bartholet, Clovis Chaboissier, Monty Farmer, Charlie Gillespie, Jack Kaye, TheoMitchell- Clark, Imogen Mockford and Aaron Skeels.

Sevenoaks played four games . Sidcup were first up. A strong physical teamwhere we struggled in the first half to compete at the breakdown. Some great support and direct running secured a hard fought 2-2 draw. Next up TJ's 2. They struggled to compete with a Sevenoaks team who had kick started themselves into life. Some great turn over play and eye catching zig zag runs contributed to Oaks running out 4-2 winners.

Due to fixture back log we had a back to back match against TJ's 1 . A far different set of players against some tired legs within the Oaks team who struggled to win at the breakdown and were soundly beaten 6-0. With a rested bodiesand energy drinks on board the drive and determination returned in the final game against Tunbridge Wells. A slick and determined oaks 1 won the battleground of the breakdowns and ended up running in winners 6-2.

This was a great team effort with contributions from all players who should be immensely proud of their performance throughout the festival.

Old Colfe’s match reports

We had two teams at Old Colefians today, the imaginatively named Sevenoaks 1 and Sevenoaks 2…..

Sevenoaks 1: Thomas Hyde, Brennan O'Keefe, Ollie Dimond, Sandy Carrick, Freddie Lowndes, Oliver Richardson,   Colby Bedford-Eatwell and Charlie Drysdale with Max Weststrate being drafted in for injury cover from the third game.

First up we had an easy game against Beccehamians and we ran out 6-2 winners. The boys played well though and the choice piece of play was a rip from Ollie D to feed Thomas who then jinked through some heavy traffic to touch down. Freddie took the ball forward a number of times and was often found in good supporting positions throughout the day. Charlie, Brennan, Sandy and a Thomas hat-trick made up the scoring.

Next up was TJ's and by far the toughest game of the day. We got better as the day unfolded and if we had met them later in the tournament it may have been a different story. TJ's were ferocious in their hits and rucking and this took us by surprise in the first half when all the damage was done. However, the boys dug deep and produced their best performance for the second half standing toe to toe with the oppo with Oliver R, Colby, Sandy and Charlie in particular matching the physicality thrown at them. The boys should be rightly proud of their performance and it was not reflected in the 6-0 score.

The physicality of the TJ's game left its mark with Brennan and Charlie both carrying knocks into the next game so Max Westrate was drafted over to fill the gap.  Beckenham's try at the very start of the game was a direct result of an injury changeover. Beckenham got another score against the run of play but the boys didn't let it get them down and built a good position to release Brennan for a run to the try line taking 3 opposing players over the line to score our first. This was his last act of the day as this brave effort aggravated his injury and he could not continue. At half time we were 2-1 down but the boys were determined to overhaul the deficit. In the second half Thomas had another great run to get over the line. Then towards the end great defensive pressure pushed Beckenham back for Oliver R to rip the ball and drive over the line. In a cruel twist of fate Beckenham got a last chance equaliser (3-3) but we know we were the better team.

The last game of the day was OAs. Sevenoaks proved the far better team and despite the lack of a substitutes bench looked to have more stamina than the OAs. Max got a brace with one particularly impressive run down the wing at lightning speed. Ollie D, in the thick of it all day, capitalising on some good pressure from Sandy ripped the ball once again and finished wit a try of his own. Sandy also got across the whitewash to make the final score 4-0 rounding the day off as it should have been.

Well played everyone.

Sevenoaks 2: Harry Bouverie, William Brooke, Kyle Cameron, Ethan Henrey, Taylor Nash, Gerran Prescott, Rory Staunton, Joel Walter, Max Weststrate (first 2 games)

Oaks team 2 started to get their bucket and spades out on arrival at Old Colfe’s. There was more sand on the pitch than grass! Luckily they weren’t distracted for too long as their first opponents were Blackheath, who were likely to be the toughest opposition of the day. It was a close fought first half with Oaks just squeezing over the line to go 1-0 up. Blackheath piled on the pressure with Oaks losing too many balls at the ruck. Blackheath pulled the score back to 1-1. Cameron settled the game showing great speed whilst running around the opposition with his second of eight tries in the day. The final score was 3-1 to the Oaks.

Next up were Old Elthamians, another strong squad with lots of subs. After a tentative start in the first game to rucking, the Oaks were completely transformed in this match and won the ball at the breakdown time and again. Henrey exhibited steely determination as he got stuck into close contact – he wasn’t going to be pushed back.  After some wonderful team play, Weststrate utilised his trade-mark side stepping to leave the Old Es players clutching at thin air as he made his way over for the final try making the score 3-1.

Although the Oaks were now down to 8 men, they were on a roll. Cranbrook didn’t stand a chance as the player of the tournament Prescott took charge of the breakdown and barrelled over for 2 tries. After some near misses in the first couple of matches, Brook used his canny skills to be in the right place at the right time and pulled off 2 interception tries. Bouverie took his favourite route 1 to go straight through the middle of the opposition and over the try line. The final score was 6-0 to the Oaks.

In the last game, the Oaks showed some complacency from the first whistle as Bromley ran through some weak Oaks tackle attempts to go 1-0 up. The Oaks rallied round each other and showed some fantastic team spirit as they went on to bag a hat full of tries. Six of the 8 players scored as they encouraged each other to take the ball and ‘have a go’. Nash showed great strength to run through several tackles for his try. Staunton took the ball in his own half pushed through numerous tackle attempts and launched over the line for his. Walter used his dancing feet as he ran through heavy traffic to go over for his score. The final score was 9-2 to the Oaks. A great end to great day!

Sunday 12th March 2017. What a great day of rugby.

With 4 teams at festivals and a number of players struck by sickness in the 24 hours those that played did themselves enormously proud. At Guildford you could barely tell who was on which team with all the muddy shirts!

Old Elthamian’s Match report:

Team : Colby Bedford- Eatwell, Kyle Cameron, Sandy Carrick, Charlie Gillespie, Jack Kaye, Jack McLeish, Bruno Millward, Edward Stangroome, Rory Staunton, Sammy Tansley.

Sevenoaks started full of energy against a Blackheath team. The Oaks displayed excellent team discipline both in attack and defence. Many tries scored eventually winning 8-2. Nextup OE's 1. A very well drilled team showing great rucking at speed and breaking through the oaks defence line on a few occasions. OE's ran out 4-2 winners.

Third game saw Oaks take on Dartfordians. A very physical team. A Huge impressive defence shown by the Sevenoaks players kept them at bay,  eventually running out 5-2 winners. Many Oaks players receiving medical attention throughout the match but thankfully no long term injuries. Last match sawus line up against Sidcup. By this time with tiring legs and some players carrying minor injuries the team struggled to maintain the same level of playheldas in the previous matches. Sidcuprunning out 5-1 winners.

The weather held off for the duration of the festival on this spring like day.

Guildford A team match report

As we arrived at Guildford, the heavens opened, but spirits were not lost as the players got stuck into the very muddy conditions. The A’s were several men down due to a sickness bug. With only 8 players for the entire tournament, each player had to play every game. Team: Charlie Drysdale, Oliver Richardson, Gerran Prescott, Hamish McQueen, William Brook, Joel Walter, Lars Hansen, Thomas Hyde.

First opponents were Windsor who they drew against in the final of the same competition last year. It was a close fought game with neither side scoring in the first half, although the Oaks managed to go over the try line four times only to be held up or drop the ball! Both teams came out fighting in the second half. Showing his blistering pace, Hamish McQueen squeezed over for the first try after some fantastic rucking by Gerran Prescott who was clearing the opposition out all over the park. However Windsor came back with a break away try by their flying winger. Sevenoaks dug in and after some great support play, Charlie Drysdale ran in for the winning try on the final whistle to make it 2-1 to the Oaks.

Next up were Brighton who had a significant weight advantage, with a couple of their players touching 10 stone! This didn’t daunt Oliver Richardson who put in some immense tackles to stop them in their tracks. The Oaks first try was scored by Joel Walter who glided over to score after running a ‘Jonathan Joseph’ line outside the spritely Oaks halfbacks. Brighton fought back with a break away try running from one end of the pitch to another. Tom Hyde wasn’t going to stand for a draw, so he showed some fantastic individual skills stepping through several tackles to score not once, but twice to end the score 3-1 to Sevenoaks.

After a quick refuelling stop, next up were the home team Guildfordians, who had been unbeaten so far. The game was played on the muddiest pitch of the day, which slowed down the Oaks running game. In a 1970’s ‘stick it up the jumper’ game, there was very little between the teams who both showed immense tackling and rucking skills. However, the Oaks managed to pin the home side down in their half for most of the game. Lars Hansen took advantage of the smallest of gaps, stepped several players and went over for the only score of the match. 1-0 to the Oaks.

Last up were Chobham. All the Oaks players were now on their last feet, having each played their hearts out against teams who had multiple subs. Digging deep, they came out fighting to go up quickly with another try from Charlie Drysdale and then a wonderful full pitch-length run showing his sensational zig-zag skills from Will Brook. Chobham managed to pull one back, but were down and out when Hamish McQueen went over with a swallow dive in the corner to make it 3-1.

What a great day - see attached for a photo of the ‘dirty eight’!

Old Beccehamians Festival report

Team: Harry Bouverie, Eleanor Colesmith, Luke Dimond, Olly Dimond, Theo Mitchell-Clark, Peter Lines, Freddie Lowndes, Alec Schaeffer, Edward Thompson, JC Vermeulen.

The traffic converging on West Wickham and the parking diversion up a distant residential road were sure signs that this coach had finally reached the correct destination. His local "rugby instinct" had taken him first to Beckenham rugby club several miles further north in suburbia where he was greeted with an empty car park and a short-lived elation of being the first car there!

So, a tent-less Oaks team gathered for what promised to be the battle of SE London, with our "premiership" U10 Pool C including giants of the area in Old Alleynians A, Sidcup A, Old Whits A and Beckenham B.

The opener versus Old Alleynians proved a tight encounter with the first half starting with the sizeable opposite crafting a powerful movement through our central defences.  JC started the day as he meant to continue with a long carry and drive for the line to even the score. The game was decided only by a controversial winning try by the OAs after their left wing had definitively grazed the sideline before the ball was swung back to the right wing for a dash to glory. Freddie also showed great intent with excellent support and cover defence while Alec was all over the pitch with thumping tackles. 1-2.

The pace and physicality of the day continued as the Oaks faced off the Old Whits, another stacked A team. This was an impressive outfit, although one that unluckily (via a couple of handling errors) ended up going down 2-4 to Alleynians in the later group decider.  Whits benefited from the extraordinary services of one player (outstanding also by his wild shaggy locks) who seemed to combine the physicality of a Haskell (although a better knowledge of the laws of the game), the balletic footwork of a Joseph and the cool awareness of a Farrell. Eddie Jones would be advised to keep a watch on here.  They raced into a 4-0 lead before our tacklers-in-chief, Harry, Alec and Luke found a way to shut down their talisman. We then clawed back to a respectable 2-5 with Peter applying the final downward pressure on the ball after a chaotic skirmish in the OA's try area. Edward also powered over for one of several determined finishes during the day from midfield. Eleanor played a fine game with neat handling and several probing runs into enemy territory.

Next was Beckenham. After the epic preceding battles, this was more of a prosaic, even text book, performance with Sevenoaks dismantling the opposition in all areas of the game. A feisty Theory piled over for the first score, with Harry, Alec and JC also crossing the white-wash (which was actually blue!). However the try of the day was saved to the end with our Peter cutting down their biggest prop on our line, then ripping the ball off the Becks support player before feeding Olly for a long surge down the left flank and a pop pass inside to brother Luke to finish a jinking run in the right corner. A Double Dimond flourish!  5-1.

Lastly Sidcup. While possibly not their strongest squad on the road this weekend, they are always a formidable presence in the SE London Rugby sphere, combining strength with discipline. Oaks were however well into our stride and wave after wave of superb support plays, ripping and great handling negated the impact of our losing the ball five times by running into touch!  6-0 (Edward 2, JC 2, Alec, Harry).

While the final mid-table outcome may have been a little harsh on the Oaks, it was a showcase pool and the team displayed rugby skills, commitment and cohesion that was the envy and fear of our opposition, while fostering further goodwill and local rivalries to relish in the months and years ahead.

Guildford B Team report

The B(est) team arrived at Guildford looking slightly sleepy and waterlogged - it didn't bode well for our first game against Teddington!

So it proved, as we struggled to wake up (preferring a Sunday stroll rather than Sunday Rugby!).  Having said that the team played as a team with some good points to build on in the next games.  A highlight was Oscar's try, scored with a now trademark textbook dummy, sending them the wrong way, followed by a sprint for the line!  Unfortunately the team's tackling was still asleep, resulting in a close 2-3 loss.

After a coaches talk and some good tackle practice, the team came out for Windsor firing on all cylinders with some fantastic running, passing and some hard tackles.  Even with the renewed vigour, the team conceded another 2-3 loss, really down to one very fast player on their team who we just couldn't stop.  Players of note: Jamie and Zach for tackles, Mitch and Taylor for huge strength in driving forwards and Ethan for fantastic support play and real speed, enabling him to get one of our tries.

Next up was Chichester.  We'd been improving - could we finally get a win??  Despite a pitch that was like playing on the side of the South Downs, the team spirit was very obvious.

The team was now awake - there was real grit and determination - there were loads of great tackles and forward driving (with lots of touch line support!). Players of note: great play by Johnny for making space on the wing, Harry for great ripping, Imogen for being slippery through a tough defence.  We won 2-0 - an excellent result!!

Our heads were high after getting our first win.  As you can see from the attached photo - the team were very muddy and happy!!  Next was a try line to try line game with a lot of running against Reigate. With an injury on the opposition, both teams were down to 7 with rolling subs we were able to start to dominate and came away with a final win 1-0!!  Jamie played brilliantly - in the heart of the action, tackling and tucking well.  Our try was the result of great team play - passing down the line followed by a great drive for the line from Mitch - hooray!

So - a great day in the mud and rain at Guildford.”  (team photo below)

Sidcup Festival...26th Feb 2017...Sevenoaks Team 1

Sevenoaks 1 was made of the following players: German Prescott, Monty Farmer, Alec Schaeffer, Jamie Wishart, William Brook, Sandy Carrick, Clovis Chaboissier, Thomas Hyde, Brennan O'Keefe and Liam Bartholet.

The first match was against Westcombe Park. A great match with a lot of intensity and a lot of ripping and balls gained in the rucks. This was the theme of the day, rucking was excellent with Gerran setting the example. This guy could not play for Italie 😀Some great positions in the scrums allowed Will to adjust his pass perfectly to Brennan launched at full speed that no defence could have stopped.
Sevenoaks won by 2 tries.

S1 then played 2 Barbarians teams. After few missed tackles and a defence not as organised as their first game, they drew both games. However, they show some great spirit by coming back after being 2 tries down. Some great attacking again that allowed the fast runners such as Liam, Will to show their abilities.

In the other 2 games against Beckenham and Old Colfeins, the boys had reorganised their defence with some fantastic tackles from Alec and Tom. They won both games.
With Gerran out in our last game, Sandy and Clovis did some excellent contest in the rucks.

An overall, great day of rugby with some superb skills. Some great lessons learned and addressed very quickly.

Congratulations to all the players.

Cyril Chaboissier

Sidcup Festival.. 26th Feb 2017...Sevenoaks Team 2

***PLEASE SEND PHOTOS TO ADD TO THE BLOG TO jane.sevenoaksrugby@gmail.com***

Our squad at the Henry Dowswell Festival of Rugby in Sidcup was split into two evenly matched teams (the 1s and 2s).

The 2s were made up of Oliver Richardson, Ben Millett, Josh Wood, Harry Bouverie, Hamish McQueen, Kyle Cameron, Oliver Dimond, Oscar Goodwin, Joel Walter and Harry House.  I thought – a great team, to a man – this is going to be fun.  And so it turned out!

Five games were played, mainly in quite strong winds (which blew the gazebo away at one stage)!

First up was Beccs.  We had massively strong tackling throughout the day, and this game set the tone.  We won 2-0, with a try of real power and brutality from Oliver Richardson, and one of speed and finesse from the flying Harry Bouverie!

Next up came the first of two mixed-ability Sidcup sides – Sidcup 3.  The games were 4 minutes a side, and we won 7-0.  The team played brilliantly.  Particularly notable were Hamish’s 4 tries (out of his 10 that day!), and Ben Millett’s power play down the middle of the park – head down and driving forwards!!  It was the team’s sheer speed and superb passing that they couldn’t cope with – the pitches were big, and this gave the “flyers” the space to play!

So – onto Sidcup 2.  Would they cope with us any better?  Marginally…!  Our 5-1 win again reflected consistently brilliant defence – turning defence into attack as we pushed them back and back… Josh Wood really stands out for this – first up when defending, straight at the first receiver, taking them on and putting them under pressure.  Brilliant!  There was also a lovely move in this game – Harry House passing to Oscar Goodwin, who dummied their entire team and ran almost the entire distance of the pitch, passing to Joel Walter, who was supporting brilliantly, to score the try.  Real teamwork and skill – great to see.

After lunch, we had Park House.  Another 7-0 win for us, everyone had fun.  My personal highlight was the teamwork that led to Harry House’s try.  I think everyone was involved in the tackling and brilliant hands that led to the try – its great to see the training pay off, and that try really showed great passing and running onto the ball at speed.  And then there’s Harry’s great finishing – would he make it passed their last two defenders – YES!

I’d also highlight Kyle’s immense spirit.  He was fouled badly, being tripped up while at full speed in the Park House game.  His try straight after this was the very definition of power play: no one was going to stop him!  His tackling was also consistently brilliant throughout the day – one of our very best tacklers.

Finally, Edenbridge.  We knew they’d be tough – they were also unbeaten so far.  And so it turned out – very aggressive in loose play, their rucking was immense.  Could our game hold up?  Yes – in the game of the day, we fought them off, tackling and tackling, pushing forwards and trying to find space.  Oliver Dimond’s speed on the ball was brilliant in this crunch match – he was everywhere, running hard at them, clearing the ball out to his team and making crunching tackles.  We won 1-0, with a real piece of brilliance from Hamish – the man has an extra gear that just wipes out the opposition.  The finger to the sky as he dived over the try line was a real way to celebrate a magic moment!

So – 22 tries to 1 over the course of 5 games: not a bad result!!  Well done to all – they should be very proud of their immense spirit and superb skill.

The Eagles and the Hawks swooped down on Farnborough (Festival Report 13th November 2016)

The first visit to Farnborough on a bright Remembrance Day Sunday morning.

Sevenoaks Hawks : Eleanor, Ben K, Ben Millet Gerran Prescott, Oliver Richardson, Jonny Chambers, Edward Stangroome, Sam McCann, Harry House and Jack McCleish.

Sevenoaks Eagles : Charlie Gillespie, Sammy Tansley, Jack K, Zach, Rory Staunton, Freddie Lowndes, Mitch Short, Sandy Carrick and Ethan Henry

The Hawks swooped into action from the first whistle against the Staines.

With some solid defence and fine running, the Hawks were able to score a fine victory.

Next up was the local derby against Sevenoaks Eagles. By far and away the closest match of the day, all ten players worked hard as a team but unfortunately ran out a close second by a single try. Special mention to Gerran and Oliver for tirelessly tackling, rucking and driving.

We then had two minutes silence which, I am proud to be able to report, was observed impeccably.

After the break, we faced the two home teams of Farnborough A and then B. In the first we ran out winners with good running from Harry and Jack in particular. Sam McC had clearly been well rested before this match as he really stepped up and scored some superb tries. The second was a closer affair, but the Hawks' teamwork shone through with notable performances from Ben K and Eleanor.

Finally we were up against Sutton in their Baa Baas kit. By this time some fatigue was setting in and it was helpful that we had established a good first half lead as in the second we came under a lot of pressure - we could easily have been on the wrong side of the score line. However, once again the Hawks delivered and with the finest swooping, diving and soaring we finished our time on the pitch in the best way possible. Special mention to Ben M for some very determined tackling.

The Eagles first prey were Farnborough A.

Some superb rucking and straight line running from Sammy Tansley and Rory Staunton secured a 3-0 half time lead. The team were displaying huge confidence with ball in hand being  dispatched to the wings with great tries from Freddie, Ethan and Zach. The eagles ran out 7-1 winners.

Next up Epsom and Ewell. Great individual skill and physicality from Sandy Carrick produced  2 early tries running through 5 tackles. Jack Kaye ripped the ball from the opposition and powered his way over the try line with sheer determination and strength touching down through many of the opposition.Eagles running out 5-1 winners.

Next up as described above Oaks Eagles v Hawks. Some great combative play with tackles, rucks and mauls   all over the field from the first minute of the match. Honour's almost even until Eagles scored a second try late on in the game.  Awesome straight line running and power shown by Charlie Gillespie inspired the team on. The Eagles next opposition up Staines. A powerful team with determined players. The team were showing signs of fatigue . Eagles 3-1 down at half time but determined to Fight back. Brilliant straight line running and determination from Mitch enabled the team to fight back 3-3. With two minutes of time remaining Staines scored a breakaway try. Not to be out  done Eagles dug deep and scored a last minute try with   Sublime passing out to the wing for Ethan to score. Final score 4-4.The last game of the day  against Farnborough B saw the team complete a great days rugby with 5 tries being scored, running out 5-1 winners.

The festival adopted a scoring process in line with England RFU TREDS framework (teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship). Sevenoaks Hawks proudly flew off onto the afternoon sun with the trophy of the day and Eagles finishing second. All players should be hugely proud of the contribution they made to the festival.

Lest we forget.

At 11am today, the U10s and their coaches stood in silence in the autumn sunshine to mark Remembrance Sunday. The start and end of the two minute silence was signalled by the firing of a canon at the Vine War Memorial at 11am.

Remembrance Sunday always falls on the second Sunday of November.  In 1947 it was agreed that World War One and World War Two would be remembered on one day, Remembrance Sunday.

Armistice Day, on November 11, commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies and Germany at 11am on November 11, 1918. The Armistice marked the end of four years of fighting in the World War I.   Each year, there is a two minute silence to mark the occasion - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - and to remember those killed in the two World Wars and the 12,000 British servicemen killed or injured since 1945.

There are some links in the comments box below to stories of rugby players who fought and died in WW1.

Those U10s and coaches who were not playing away at Farnborough observing the 2 minute silence today.

U10 Tigers show their stripes (Aylesford, 6 November 2016)

On a bright and breezy morning at Aylesford just off the M20, the U10 Tigers endured their longest warm-up ever - around 90 minutes, as their first fixture was oddly not until 11 as three other matches had to be completed first.

This meant that they were well and truly drilled and ready for the first match, against a powerful-looking Canterbury 1. The Crusaders from Mid-East Kent were rocked from the start with surging runs and finishes from Luca, Gerran and Hamish, tidy hands all around and wall-like defence from the likes of Harry and Thomas. A marauding solo effort from Benjy saw half a dozen Crusaders grasping at thin air as our burly forward danced through their ranks. Oaks managed to get ahead 4-0 before allowing a Canterbury speed merchant to take his one and only chance to score. After a superb long-range finish by Joel the final score reached 5-1 with five different Tigers scorers epitomising the superb team play.

Sevenoaks having thrown down the gauntlet, Thanet 2 took up the challenge. The fierce rivals from Far-East Kent started brightly but couldn't match the relentless support play and faultless handling of the Tigers. In spite of three decent enough tries of their own, there was no refuge on Planet Thanet from the eight-headed, sixteen-legged blue-and-yellow alien that was the Oaks team, notching up nine tries from eight different players, surely a club record! A highlight was Luke's extraordinary run from halfway finishing with a side-step which sent three Thanet defenders into touch.

Third up was Gravesend. The grim black-and-white side from the North Kent marshes were sturdy and determined. The Tigers started scrappily, getting rattled by the Gravesend Diggers who shovelled in from the side at pretty much every breakdown. Our two tries (Luca and Harry) in the first half were a real team effort with good ball retention and rucking at the breakdown. One gap in our line was exploited by a Digger clawing one back. Yet the Oaks dug deep. Trench warfare in the second half put paid to any more scores from either side. Sevenoaks just scraped through, ahead 2-1.

Finally, with clouds closing in and temperature tumbling, the Mid-Kentish hosts, Aylesford, sought to please the home crowd, only to be faced with an exhibition performance from the plucky West Kent visitors. An early steal by Olly D close to the Oaks line and a quick pop outside unleashed Hamish who darted down the length of the touchline with the opposition grasping at air. Thereafter the tries came a-gushing, another ten from seven different players. Two unselfish and slick passes on the line from Hamish saw excellent supporting tries from Thomas and Freddy to add to fine scores also by Oliver R, Liam, Luca and Benjy. 11-0.

Topping off an excellent day on the field were some energetic rotating contributions by the Tigers to a strong "BaBas" replacement team. This showcased rugby spirit and the saw young Sevenoaks players mucking in and playing stylish and enjoyable rugby alongside new comrades from other clubs.

Last weekend, Sunday 6th November

We had some great rugby at Aylesford festival yesterday, where both teams did really well winning all their games bar one. It was great to see such team spirit. Watch this space for match reports.

We also entertained Edenbridge at home training, again our players did themselves proud.

Please send in any photos from the weekend that can be added to the match or training reports.

Sunday, 30th October...Beccs Festival & Home Training

Home training as normal, 10.15am,  you are not at the Beccehamian festival.

A couple of points about the festival...There is a £5 entrance fee per family.  Teams will play matches in pools of 5, with each team playing 4 games each. Each half will be 7 minutes and there will be 1 minute for half time.

Parking can be tricky so get there early. The club is in Greater London where it is an offence to park on the pavement. There will be no parking on Corkscrew Hill nor Addington Road in both directions.  Some roads close to the club may also have some areas coned off in order to ensure that traffic can flow through and emergency access.  The club has limited parking onsite which will be first come, first served.   There are quite a few residential roads where parking can be found just a short walk from the club.

SPARROWS DEN, CORKSCREW HILL, WEST WICKHAM, KENT.

Postcode for Sat. Nav. is: BR4 9BB

Good luck to those playing at the festival.
