On this bright and windy Sunday morning our U14 A’s travelled to Harpenden RFC in Hertfordshire. The following magnificent boys represented our club:

Pearl, Maynard, Smith, Brooke, Ebsworth, Stratton, Barrett, Lay, Holden

Baker, Beaufoy, Dixon, Daly, Hansen, Johnson, Kitchen (Capt), Latrobe, Satrettin, Wilson

The game started at a fast pace with our boys running into the wind and scoring within the first few minutes applying some authority on the game. The referee had unfortunately judged an infringement by Sevenoaks and called the game back to a scrum. Whilst disappointing for our boys, they picked themselves up and continued to apply pressure on our hosts. Toward the end of the first half, our boys managed to score a try after some magnificent team play with both the forwards and the backs playing at their best. It must be said, that Harpenden U14’s are an absolutely magnificent rugby team, not having lost a match in three years and now being 5-nil down. This set the the tone for what was to become an enthralling game of rugby.

The first half ended with Sevenoaks in the ascendancy. With some minor changes the teams both went out for the second half after a much needed rest and team talk. Harpenden came straight out of the blocks on the whistle with fierce intent. Our boys soaked up the pressure and distributed the ball cleanly to the wings. With the wind behind us we managed to score and convert to make the score 12-0 with the hosts in shock. Harpenden then made a positional swap and Sevenoaks made a couple of further changes and our hosts began to apply pressure in a controlled manner. Harpenden then made some holes within the Sevenoaks defence and scored 2 tries and converted one, levelling the scores at 12-12.

There was some outstanding rugby on display from both sides; showing the spectators a feast in attacking, defending, kicking and tackling. Our forwards perfectly implementing the pick and go technique practised on the training ground, with great effect against our hosts. Our backs running lines and taking the ball at pace and being fearless in the challenge.

With seconds remaining on the clock, the referee called last play and our boys, being in their own 22, decided from our own scrum to go for the winner; such is the belief in this squad. With some good strong work from the scrum and the backs, we were inside our host’s 22 and going for the try. Absolutely amazing, heart-pumping rugby. Our hosts not wanting to take any chances, or concede a late try, decided to kick the ball out to force the end of the game. What a dominating way for our boys to finish.

This was an evenly matched game contested between two great rugby clubs. Both sides had to dig deep and work as a team as it became evident that this wasn’t a game that was going to be decided by individuals. Played in the true spirit of the game, the teams, coaches and parents were incredibly proud of their boys. Well done to all that travelled and played and we look forward to a rematch at the Paddock.
