U15s enjoyed Uckfield visit Sunday 26th

last Sunday saw our U15s visit Uckfield to join them and Hove in a 3-way match.  Unfortunately Sevenoaks had smaller numbers, so were happy to be split up between the two teams to form a 13 a side match on the day.

Some terrific running, tackling and of course lots of tries scored by our girls - who thought it fun to tackle eachother in opposing shirts!  well done Anna Jones, Catherine Davies, Katie Kelly, Phoebe Leach, Sally Williams and Sasha Petrie.

U15 Girls fought a tough match in Plate Semi Final!

U15 Girls fought a tough match in Plate Semi Final!

with guest coach TK (thank you!) our girls found fierce opposition in Thurrock/Rochford at last weekend's Area 3 U15s Plate semi final.  Facing an unbeaten scrum front line they were able to retain the ball a few times and pushed through the line to score two tries; one of which was a fantastic run half way down the pitch by Maddie.  A further conversion gave us a total score of 12. Our girls put up a strong defence against Thurrock/Rochford, who proved too much in the end scoring a total of 45.  In the face of some physical and verbal challenges our girls held their own and were a true credit to SRFC - in particular Jess; you know why :-).

The team consisted of: Maddie Bryan (5), Kate Crudgington, Olivia Crudgington, Catherine Davies (5), Katie Kelly, Phoebe Leach (2), Sasha Petrie, Jess Richards, Ellie Schwemm, Sally Williams

skills & drills in the frost!

Our U13s and U15s braved the freezing cold last weekend to visit Tunbridge Wells for a shortened training session which included lots of skills in drills.  Excellent opportunity for U13s girls to start working alongside the TW U13s in their newly formed Barbars team!

U15s end the year in a tough match against Ashford

One final challenge this year for our U15s proved to be a tough end to the year.  Against a very formidable Ashford team, our U15 girls put in a solid performance, some excellent tackles and passing down the line.   A well deserved 3-week break lies ahead - see you in the new year!

U15s put up a strong opposition against Aylesford

Another Area 3 cup competition match saw us going to Aylesford, in what was expected to be a tough match.  Our girls jumped ahead by scoring two tries within the first 15 minutes, leading 10 - 0.  Aylesford were soon to reply, by scoring two tries themselves and converting a kick.  Sevenoaks were not to be defeated., having scored another two tries they led again.  Aylesford came back even stronger and scored more tries in response.  Towards the end our girls seemed to run out of steam,  making a few silly errors, ie. not picking the ball up and running into the middle; which ultimately gave Aylesford the opportunity to score two more tries, winning 39-29.  Great efforts  put in by all and some brilliant moments of team work!!  Sevenoaks girls: Anna, Beth Catherine (15), Ellie, Fran, Jess, Katie (5), Lucy (5), Maddie B, Maddie R, Phoebe (4), Sally, Sasha

U15s Soar to victory against Dartfordians

What a way to start the cup competition! Our U15s girls - old and new alike put in a very impressive team effort, resulting in an amazing 54 - 0 victory over Dartfordians.

With possession pretty much throughout the match our girls were able to pass the ball down the line resulting in a few breakaways. Good tackling, rucking and some solid passes enabled several of our girls to get those vital tries in.

There were also numerous examples of great team work and clinical rugby (to quote a spectating coach); one example was Charlotte pop passing the ball to Catherine, enabling her to score. Special mention must also go to Lucy for trying something new and getting a couple of the conversion kicks over - not easily done.

Kudos to our new girls for stepping up to experience their first match - Beth, Jade and Maddie - with the final two scoring tries.

The match lasted a total of 50 mins (30 mins first half, 10 min break, then 10 mins of the second) at which time the match ended as Sevenoaks had reached/passed the total score of 50.

Our team consisted of Anna, Beth, Catherine (20), Charlotte, Ellie (5), Fran, Jade (5), Katie, Lucy (14), Maddie B (5), Maddie R, Sally (5), Sasha

U15s and U18s put in sterling effort at Kent trials

Some of our U15s and U18s put in a strong performance at the Kent trials yesterday.  Congratulations to Anna, Lucy and Sally who are on this season's Kent U15s.  Good luck to Catherine and Katie who are on a call back.

Kent coaches came to me and commented how impressive Phoebe, Maddie, Elspeth and Josie were.  Sadly this was not meant to be their year - but who knows what the future may hold!

The club is proud of all our girls for giving it a go!

U15s kick off the season with a Sevens victory against Tunbridge Wells

Well, what a start to the season... our U15s Sevens girls started the season in style!

After only one training session this season, our girls faced the formidable Tunbridge Wells girls in a curtain raiser Sevens match.  A few handling errors could have led to early tries, however this was not meant to be.  Dusting off the cobwebs and finding their form the girls eventually found their hand to ball.  Pulling together they were able to score their first try, by Katie, which was followed by a terrific conversion kick from Phoebe.  A determined Tunbridge Wells side answered with a try.  The second half produced some great rugby and excellent team work which resulted in another try, by Catherine, giving the end result of 12-5 to Sevenoaks.  Team members were:

Anna, Catherine, Fran, Katie,Lucy, Maddie, Phoebe, Sally.  Our mighty oak girls!

Can anyone play rugby? Yes they can!

Valence School students & Sevenoaks RFC Girls U13s&U15s proved this to be true.

On Friday 22nd April, secondary students at Valence school in Westerham, (a school with students of varying degrees of physical disabilities and complex medical issues), enjoyed a fun filled rugby afternoon with Sevenoaks U13 and U15 girls.  Starting with skill sessions including; run the tackling tube or ‘sausage’ down, slalom driving/running & ball passing, everyone later joined in a competitive game of rob the nest, followed by combined matches, in which an even greater competitive spirit came out by all.  At the end all students were given the famous orange beanie from SRFC and a Wooden Spoon wristband.

The day was led by Christopher Leach and David Rabbitt, two of the Sevenoaks Girls’ Coaches; with support from Michael Wooldridge, Junior Chairman of SRFC and Nick Wilkinson, SRFC Rugby Development Officer.

We were also extremely lucky to have Andy Barrow – a 3-time wheelchair rugby Paralympian who ran a further session & refereed the matches.  Andy later gave an inspiring talk to all with the main message being ‘we all have different challenges in life; we all can overcome these challenges.’

Also supported by the Wooden Spoon, a charity who fund projects across the UK and Ireland to support disabled and disadvantaged children, happily cheering everyone on from the side lines.  Peter Johnston, from the Wooden Spoon Kent, commented on the uplifting spirit of the day & particularly noted how well SRFC girls and Valence students worked so closely together; ‘..Sevenoaks Girls are true ambassadors of both the club and the sport of rugby.’

Later on in the day a Valence School teacher tweeted; ‘ @ValenceSchool students loved the rugby coaching from @SevenoaksRFC girls’ --  that is what the day was all about!

SRFC girls in attendance were: Izzy Avery, Charlotte Bowyer, Zoe Clarke, Rosa Cunningham, Catherine Davies, Josie Hamon, Harriett Hockey, Isla Jackson, Katie Kelly, Georgia Lane, Phoebe Leach, Elspeth O’Shea, Sasha Petrie, Millie Rabbitt, Maddie Roff, Tori Sellors, Hannah Walton, Sally Williams

U13 Kent Cup Champions - Match Report

So it was that the so far unbeaten Sevenoaks U13 Girlsteam took to the field on the afternoon of Sunday 13th March in the finals of the South East U13 girls competition.

After 4 earlier rounds the competition had been streamlined and Oaks were drawn against the 4 other top teams in the region Ashford, Sutton and Epsom, Worthing and Eton Manor.

In what turned out to be a thrilling afternoon of top class rugby all 5 teams played to the highest standard.

In their first game Oaks were drawn against a very strong Eton Manor team travelling from North London. The game was hard fought with both teams showing great attacking flair and defensive skills. The deadlock was broken by 2 superb individual efforts from Roff, breaking through the Manor defence to put Oaks in front. In the second half Manor scored immediately causing Oaks some concern. Manor called on strong subs who stretched the Oaks defence but were unable to break it further. Taking advantage of a lull in the attack and after some superb counter rucking by Sellors, Davies put in 2 more tries to put the game out of reach and giving Oaks their first win. Score Oaks 4 Eton Manor 1 (scorers Davies 2, Roff 2)

They were on their way.

Game 2 saw Oaks face their fiercest opponents of the competition in Sutton and Epsom. Previously when the teams had met the games were hard fought with little or nothing between them. It was Oaks who drew first blood, using their width and scoring a superb running try in the corner. Sutton continued to present a threat scoring a great breakaway try from their excellent winger and coming close on more than one occasion but the ferocious tackling of Oaks (especially Davies) meant they never crossed the Oaks line again. Oaks were getting more confident and began to turn the screw using fast ball from the ruck to stream through the gaps created by the opposition. 3 further tries had been scored by the final whistle as Oaks ran out winners 4-1.(Scorers Roff 2, Jones 1, Walton 1)

In game 3 Oaks faced an Ashford team who had come into the competition with an impressive track record. Although Oaks were confident and opened the score with a strong running try from Rabbitt they were rocked when Ashford drew level almost immediately. Oaks realised they were in a game and put in a superb defensive effort to deny 2 almost certain tries for Ashford. Oaks pressed and were rewarded when Jones fed Davies who broke through 3 tackles to score in the corner. Ashford levelled again through their strong centres but Oaks dug deep communicating, winning ball at the breakdown (Sellors, Davies) breaking tackles (Roff, Rabbitt, O'Donnell) and running in 2 unanswered tries ending the game winners by a margin of 4-2 (Scorers Roff 1, Rabbitt 1, Davies 2).

In their final game Oaks faced a Worthing team that they last played in September. Worthing were no match for Oaks who used their experience to take advantage of poor defence and distribution and punished Worthing by 12 tries to nil at the final whistle. (tries Roff 3, Davies 3, Rabbitt 1, Sellors 1, Jones 1 Walton 1, Jackson 1 and Owen 1)

This amazing team had played 20 games in this competition they had won 19 drawn 1 and lost none. They had scored 133 tries to 26 conceded.

Quite rightly they are the RFUs champions of THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND (SORRY KENT).

All hail Sevenoaks Under 13 Girls Rugby team

Maddie Roff, Emily Rabbitt, Catherine Davies, Tori Sellors, Anna Jones, Hannah Walton, Charlotte Owen, Zoe Clarke, Aoife O'Donnell and Isla Jackson.
