#Thisgirlcan - How Sevenoaks Rugby is ensuring sport for all means just that
"The girls rugby section at Sevenoaks Rugby was introduced three years ago, to give local girls the chance to enjoy the sport in a well supported environment, focusing on quality coaching and bringing rugby's values to the fore," says Tonya Williams, manager, Sevenoaks Rugby girls section. "We now run two year groups, Under 13s and Under 15s; this year five of our Under 15s girls have been selected to play for Kent; Anna Jones, Catherine Davies, Katie Kelly, Lucy Fitzmaurice and Sally Williams.
"This outstanding progress demonstrates the commitment by the club and coaches in engaging girls to this sport. However, none of this would have been achieved without the girls, who are all remarkable and dedicated young sports women."
Here are a few anecdotes about/from our girls:
Catherine Davies came to us from another club. Her development through SRFC has been incredible. From playing at club level, she has progressed through to Kent and now is an England South East Regional U15 player. Catherine's future as a rugby player looks very promising indeed.
Lucy Fitzmaurice, was among the players involved in the girls section from the start. "I got a taste for rugby playing in the Club's mixed year groups and then gave up at Under 10s," says Lucy. "When the girls section was introduced, I jumped at the chance to take up the sport again."
Tori Sellors started playing at the Club in the minis at the U7 age group and showed some early promise of things to come. “I’ve enjoyed winning matches and leagues with the boys in previous years and was very happy to share an early success with the girls.” Tori says, “I am really looking forward to progressing my rugby skills with the U15s, as I have lots of friends in this squad.”
Sally Williams, only started playing as the girls section came to be. "I was so bored of watching my brother play, as I really wanted to learn how to play and get stuck in too. I love playing rugby and am happy that I now am much better than him!"
