Life has felled one of our Club’s hardiest Oaks. Phil Bradshaw, President, Sevenoaks Rugby Club passed away on Saturday 21 May following a valiant battle with a relentless illness. Our thoughts are with his wife Tina, and family.

Phil’s funeral will be on Monday 6 June at 2:00pm at Kemnal Park Cemetery and Memorial Gardens, A20 Sidcup Bypass, Chislehurst, BR7 6RR. Directions to Kemnal Park can be found here.

There will follow a wake at 3:30pm at Sevenoaks Rugby Club, Knole Paddock Plymouth Drive, Sevenoaks, TN13 3RP.

Alongside family, friends and members are welcome at both the funeral and the wake. Dress code is not black, but navy and gold in memory of Phil.

Phil, born in 1945, was Club President from 2010, the culmination of more than 40 years as a member of the Club going back to 1972 when Phil began playing for the 3rd XV. Phil was Membership Secretary from 1985 to 1991 and Treasurer from 2003 to 2009, and was in charge of the Club’s 75th Anniversary celebrations in 2000.

Phil also ran the Sevenoaks Sevens Tournament for ten years and was one of the very first junior coaches to take a team all the way from Under 8s to Under 18s.

Phil was a family man, a caring man, a kind man, a principled man and a fiercely loyal friend. He embodied all that was best about our great game and was a true rugby man. Always there to help others, young or old, Phil was slow to chide, quick to listen or offer sage advice and always eager to help. Time spent with Phil always left you feeling better about yourself and the world around you. He was the compassionate guide we all wished we had when growing up.

Phil’s handiwork can be seen all around the Club but it is the effect he had on those around him that will be his true legacy. He has set the benchmark that all of us who try to follow in his footsteps will aspire to. ‘What would Phil do?’ will be the watchwords for many.

Our rugby family is grieving today as we remember a man we are privileged enough to call our friend. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
