DAVSS is a local charity that supports sufferers of domestic abuse. The charity is now 'captained' by our former Club Captain, Mark Hutcheon.
Sevenoaks Rugby Club has a longstanding and keen sense of responsibility towards our local and broader communities. We welcome the opportunity to promote this important update from Hutch and the chance to volunteer the most valuable resource we have; time:
"Firstly thank you for taking a couple of minutes out of your busy schedules to read this message and the attached poster.
"Some of you may already know me. I was Captain of the 1st XV in the dim and distant past, and coached in the juniors for several years. Following 30 years with Kent Police I have recently embarked on a new career as the CEO of a West Kent charity called DAVSS (Domestic Abuse Volunteers Support Services). DAVSS supports men and women who are in abusive relationships; sadly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will at some point experience domestic abuse. We help individuals make positive changes to their and their families' lives.
"While we welcome all forms of support, this direct appeal - to fellow members and supporters at a Club that I grew up playing for - is for volunteers to embark on a comprehensive training programme before putting that training to use helping others for a few hours each week.
"While many of us enjoy an often times gilded life, I know how common, corrosive and debilitating domestic violence can be. The guidance and - simply put - valuable time of the good people I know to be in and around the Club could make a huge difference.
"Alongside face to face support, safety planning advice, and support for clients attending both civil and criminal courts, DAVSS provides a Helpline for advice, guidance and signposting.
"We are currently looking for new volunteers to embark on a training course due to commence in March 2017. If you can spare a few hours or more each week and would like to assist individuals who are experiencing domestic abuse I would love to hear from you.
"We are not only looking for advisers, we would also welcome enquiries from anyone who may be able to volunteer to assist with fundraising, administration or another area of expertise. For more information please visit our website at www.DAVSS.org.uk
Please also feel to free to send me a personal message at my contacts below."
